Hello all,
I am brand new here and like this forum a lot.
I see that the DC project you guys were on has
turned in a direction you've chosen not to follow.
If you are DC addict like me, and want a very
worthwhile project to consider, then I'd like you
to consider doing Cancer Research with UD.
UD is perhaps the worlds largest distributed
computing project.
There are over 900,000 participants ( at the very
least - many are on subteams ). Many participate
on teams, of which there are over 31,000.
The competition is intense and fun. The work is
very important. Results of "our research" is given to
the University of Oxford, and their labs. They are
working on drugs to fight this scourge and the
work our computers do is invaluable to their efforts.
Many of us have lost loved ones to Cancer, and
almost certainly, many of us will be touched by this
disease at some point in our lives; be it friends,
ourselves or family.
I'm a member of a team that is ranked 35th in the
world. I'm ranked 5th on that team, and 400th in the
world. I guess you could say I'm more than a little
gung-ho about it.
From what I understand, you all are going to get
together and decide on a team project. Please
consider UD. Thanks for listening.

So perhaps you guys want to join in this fight. Take a look. We have
a blast with this thing, but we are deadly serious about our true reasons for running this project.
You guys are extreme? Ok. Come field a team for a great cause, and prove it! :D ;)

Ok...so what do you know about the company that wants to make cancer drugs from the processing the UD service is giving them? I looked all over and can't find anything.
I would like to think the profits from new drugs developed from this research would go back into cancer treatment/research, but that is not stated anywhere, which leads me to believe that the research is solely to profit some large drug manufacturer.
I mean, yes it's nice to develope cancer drugs, but I just want to know who the real beneficiary is going to be.

I don't know why I just can't seem to see the point of view that hates the drug companies.
If in a few years I have cancer and can get a drug to stop it I'll be glad that big drug company had the money for the research to develope it.

ExMad Cows.
1.3MM plus points. :D (hmmm I'm only 580 in the world Muahahahaha :D )
I'd say that makes me worthy ;)
That said, I think UD is enchanced by running another project right along beside it. :)

i have no problem with the drug companies...what i have a problem with is UD making a profit off of me. dont they sell our cpu time to the labs for these projects? they have to be making a profit off of us...how else are the funded?

This is the neutral zone for quite a few teams. We all play nice here and its nothin but love. Love of crunchin that is :D

Actually, off The Cancer Project, I do not believe UD is making a profit. It is their drawing card, though. To show the immense potential and power of the network. I believe they'd like to make a profit, eventually, off of us. That will be a dilemma. At the point where those running the Cancer Project are asked to do other stuff, is where UD may have a problem. Many of us do it out of a desire to do good, to fight the disease that has hurt us and others so much. That is what motivates many. When the time comes where that motivation, that oppurtunity is no longer there, well what then? For the forseeable timebeing it will be there. For me, for now ( and for the last year or so ) that's good enough.
For me, I wander what are they going to do when those who run the Cancer project on their computers leave. That is what drew me to UD to begin with. Funding was originally provided by MS and Intel, though neither of those large entities is still doing so ( at least, not that I'm aware of ).

Scott you should do something with that link in your sig. Its blowing out the pages in the forum. At 1024x768 on a 19" monitor im scrolling side to side to read your posts and everybody elses on the page.

i may have totally mis-spoke, but i was under the impression that UD was selling the client/work/etc to oxford? thereby selling what we were giving them for free...of course I could be getting it all wrong.

The University of Oxford Chemistry Department is home to the Centre for Computational Drug Design, funded by the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR). Oxford University used the Global MetaProcessor to accelerate cancer research on an unprecedented scale — over 80,000 computational years of work completed in less than a year, fueled exclusively by the power of compute resources across the Internet.<<< That's us.
"Instead of spending millions of dollars and years in the lab screening maybe hundreds of thousands of molecules, now it will be possible to screen hundreds of millions of molecules in months."
DR. GRAHAM RICHARDS, DIRECTOR,
NFCR CENTRE FOR COMPUTATIONAL DRUG DESIGN
