I have a directory that contains some files that are obviously corrupted. The filenames have weird ascii characters in them. When I try to delete it, I get an error message stating:

Cannot delete XXXXXX.XXX: Cannot find the specific file.
Make sure you specify the correct path and filename.

I've run scandisk/checkdisk and tried Norton Disk Doctor, but none of them detects any errors.

Is there any way, short of a format, that I can do to get rid of these files? TIA

Sorry can't really help (posting just for acknowledgement :))

Have you tried deleting the whole folder or you can't access the files at all?

Yep, I tried deleting the individual files and the whole folder. Tried deleting them from DOS, no go.

I actually deleted all the 'ok' files before, and these are all the leftover files that are corrupted. Can't do anything with that folder :\

1st of all, what OS are u using?

Have you tried deleting them in Safe Mode?

In both Safe-Mode, and Normal Mode, Try right-clicking on the files, and see if <Read Only> is checked, if it is, uncheck it, then try to delete it. If not, then try unchecking <Archive>, and then delete it.

I'm running win2k.

Well I tried booting up with a boot disk into DOS, and that didn't work, so I would imagine that Safe Mode would be the same.

Yeah, I checked the attrib settings, and nothing's been set on those particular files. It's all clear. :\

I've done some searching, and so far I've only come up with THIS (http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/advanced/help/default.asp?url=/WINDOWS2000/en/advanced/help/sag_DNS_und_UnicodeCharacterSupport.htm)
I'm not sure if this will help, but I'm still looking :)
