All is fine with dsl(Verizon 2Wire - Homeportal 100) from 98 thru Vista and now 7 beta as long as it's 32bit. The last update for the old dsl hub and usb pcport adapter just happens to have been in 2002 for 98-XP.

With no plans for wireless and FIOS not available quite yet I'm stuck with no 64bit versions of Windows being internet ready as well as never having seen any drivers for Limux.

The usb adapter and last download for XP can be seen at http://support.2wire.com/index.php?page=download

Since the adapter changes standard phone signal to usb you would think some other adapter may have 64bit drivers that will work.

All my items run fine in 64bit.

Vista, at least my copy of the 64bit version, loads 32bit drivers just fine. I even tried the usb adapter that 2wire has, and it detects it.

The problem here is that I missed a step going for the 64bit as well as 32bit beta releases of Windows 7. I had the 64bit beta on good but nothing. I kept getting the messages saying 64bit drivers needed.

With a few Linux distros the latest ubuntu 8.10 release detects but simply won't even ping the server. I had hoped to go with the 64bit version of 7 once it was out. But as you can see I'm kind of stuck in 32bit mode.

Are you running a Home Portal setup or one of the newer hubs? The updated 32bit drivers for a newer hub probably take better on Vista 64 there.

I am running Uverse Residential Gateway and use the HPNA adapter in windows vista 64 bit. Runs correctly. You may need to contact ATT or your provider for up to date drivers as when I upgraded, I told them my needs and they sent out a new unit with adapter with 64 bit drivers.

Just for giggles, I used an OLD 2wire Usb wireless adapter Gabe (who is also a member) gave me several years ago and windows vista says that it is loading a 32 bit driver and may cause problems. The driver loads and the unit works. I suspect something is wrong with your installation or your using some real old driver that is not for use.

The ISP already provided an updated gateway, hub, portal, whichever name you want to refer to it as to no avail. The entire hard wiring would have to be replaced since the newer HomePortal saw the RJ-45 type connections over the old one's RJ-33.

That however was only the hub not the usb adapter. There are three newer items that do see 64bit drivers as well as Vista support with two of them being the wireless adapters seen at the link there.

Presently FIOS isn't available here where tearing out all of the old stuff wouldn't worth it until then. And the wireless setups are out there making it even more difficult since the local ISP here is pushing mostly wireless over hard wired.

bump and apparently a working update!

What happens when the node used lacks 64bit support? You find a substitute that does! http://www.usbgear.com/computer_cable_details.cfm?sku=USBG-UE200&cats=112&catid=112

A little shorter in length from about 30" down to 8" but it will manage seeing both XP 64 and Vista 64bit drivers on the disk included for the same type of RJ-11 ethernet phone adapter.

From out of nowhere while discussing how to go about hooking up a wireless router to the existing connection plus looking a usb flash drive sized ethernet adapter I ran right into the one seen there when continuing to search by starting with 64bit drivers or support as part of it for usb ethernet phoneline adapters.

Hopefully someone else who sees this and has been having no success getting online with any 64bit Windows or plans an upgrade into one will now notice the low cost option for any present setup as an alternative to rewiring to RJ-4r for hard wiring or getting into the higher cost for adding a wireless router on.

The adapter there will still plug into the existing line while simply using a different set of drivers that come on cd for both 32/64 application making things a bit easier especially if planning to upgrade from XP 32 into either a Vista or soon to be 7 64bit edition but stuck royally with that blasted ole phoneline dsl. :mecry: UsbGear to the rescue I guess! :tup3: :thumb:

UPDATE: The two adapters ordered didn't see the power led light up when plugged into either a port or hub. While replacements are being considered or a refund for apparently defective??? adapters a good look over discovers a wireless router including wireless usb adapter maybe seeing a need for an adapter simply for plugging into the wall jack. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833181093

bump and update

Change of ISP still sees no go on 64bit Windows for connecting online. Apparently the 2088 2000/XP/Vista/Vista 64? can't be recognised by the 64bit 7 with the cable modem now in use from Scientific Atlantic provided by the ISP. Programs like DriverDetective are out without connection to begin with there.

Further update: Following the initial problems seen with the ISP provided cable modem mentioned earlier the new replacement ordered a short time later to replace the low ender provided saw working results! I should get in their ears about this but also noticed that only the usb option not the ethernet cable worked on the 32bit Windows as well suggesting a defect in the modem. Other then that the 64bit Windows 7 RC now the primary OS is doing quite well.
