It seems you didn't burn the images properly.

How did you put them (the iso files) on CD discs? Can you be a bit more detailed :)?

I unzipped the files to C:\Mandrake.
I used ISO Buster to do this.
I used Rawrite to make the bootdisk from
C:\Mandrake\01dle-8101\images\hd.img
Hd.img is a 1.440 meg file not room for anything else.
I put boot disk in A: drive and the setup goes to the part where it asks for the location of the setup files.
Mandrake 8.1
Thanks for your reply

So you're trying to install from the images without repartitioning (on a windows partition). This is an unusual approach and haven't ever done it.

I can presume you don't have a CDR burner to create the CDs (otherwise I don't see why you don't).

So once you boot from the floppy and start installation, isn't it asking for CDROM?

I can probably help you but we must go step by step as I don't have first hand experience.

Tell me exactly what you want to do (and available hardware) and at which stage you're asked for the setup files.

I doubt the installation program can see the iso's as working copies. If you have expand them to a directory and they are lying as files on disk then you may need a different boot disk that instead of looking for CDROM it asks for hard drive copy. Do you get a prompt where to install from?

Sorry I ended up having more questions than you.

Sorry for my lack of comunication skills.
In the Images dir. are several choices of boot images.
I choose the HD.img.There is one for the CD also.
I plan to just install and play ,pass time And learn.
I have not got to where it ask for the install partition yet.
"DO I get a prompt where to install from?"
Yes. That is where I am having problems.
Hardware is mostly junk pieced together to play with.Just trying to make a boot disk that will work from the hard drive.
No burner here yet.
I tried the Linux help sites but no joy.
Tried bootdisk.com.
Will CRC.EXE work on files on the hard drive?

Got it
Copied the ISO file to a bare partition and setup found it and is now loading.
No need to unzip as with WinXP ISO files.
Thanks for your help

After a few tries I partitioned the hard drive and "installed"
Mandrake. I do not have a keyboard for some reason.
I do not have any idea how to get the system joined to my network. After 3 days of fun I think I will start another project.
Maybe the next update will be a Dummies version.
How to edit Linux files from Windows98?
Neet screensaver Tux.

If you're sill on it, you can run netconfig as root to set it up. ifconfig will show you your current network setup (ip etc). If you need to see other PCs on your LAN you will need to be able to ping them first (ping 192.168.0.1) and then setup NFS for unix or Samba for windows interconnectivity.

I hope this helped a bit.
