Howdy, NeoStar :) Welcome

I was looking at your Outlook backup problem (http://www.techimo.com/forum/t4456.html) at IMO and after searching google and MS for a good 20mins, I couldn't find an answer for you.. and since I"m not running 98SE or Outlook, I can't do it hands on here. Sorry, wish I could've helped! :/

HI thanks for the welcome, I am still checking things out here, As for the hardware review, I couldn't do much there as I only have experience with limited boards, only thing i can say is that NOT to go with an Intel board. ;) Really miss my old asus board, it was so much easier to work with, don't have problems for the most part with the intel board I have but its drivers on the cd are not good at all and they are not freindly to install.

as for the ms outlook file backup problem, im not in hurry to get that back, and hope to find an answer to that eventually, if not < gulp> will have to swallow that loss. ;)

Thanks

Hey NDC Thanks, Been thinking about your articles this morning and have a zillion and 1 questions for you, Will plan to post them later as it is in regards to your partitioning tips. well not a zillion and 1 questions, more like 2 questions.

I'll post them here now, since they are on top of my head,

1. The partition for applications only, do you need an o/s installed on this partition in order for the applications to run?

2. the page file partition, how do i know where the page file is and push the page files to that partition? Im reading up more on this. (any links on page file would be appreicated, im pulling my books out adn will surf later.)

I just got done reformating my hd because of problems and want to redo it again, i have already lost my 2 of my backups. they both failed on me, one i don't care so much for and the other one was all my emails and contacts. still trying to find out if i can convert the file or something to extract the data out of there. keep getting error messages saying that can not restore or compare backup because application was running or busy during backup. didn't even have ms outlook running when i did my backup.

but really liked your article on the partionioning tips and want to do similar.

Need to take a break for a couple of days because kids need me and also I want to redo all this when kids are in school. they get too many days off. sheesh :(

Question #1: no u don't need an OS installed on a partition containing files or apps. Just as long as you have an OS installed on your primary partition, such as Win9x, Linux, etc. From one of the OS'es you should be able to run, view, edit, etc. any of those apps. on that partition containing files/apps.

Jadison,

cool thanks, reason I asked this is because a long time ago I had a dual hd disk in the computer and I used the main drive for the os and other stuff and the second hd, i used for applications but I found that I was not able to run applications off the second disk. so ended up only saving text documents and after while it turned out to be a pain so i removed that drive since. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't run applications off the second drive. So I naturally wondered that on partitions.

Thanks for the tips!
<edit> back then oh 2 or 3 years ago I didn't know about sysopt, or extremepc or TechIMO then, Im getting into the game late. probably why I am so hooked to TechIMO and now ExtremePC :D </edit>

1. Yes, that Jadison is right. As long as the OS resides on one of the partitions and you assign the drive letter of the partition the application will run from, it will be just fine.

2. The default location for the Page file (Virtual Memory) is at the root of the drive where the OS resides. However, you can change the drive (Partition) the page file will reside. Look here (http://www.xtremepccentral.com/vbforums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73) for info on how this can be done.
