OK I have cable internet now so I jus got me a router(Linksys 4 port router BEFSR41 V.2 for $40 shipped) to use instead of my hub. So do I jus hook the cable modem to the router and then plug my puters into the ports as I would with my hub? Also will I be able to share files between boxes via the router, if so how should I set it up. I had internet sharing with my dial up and a hub connecting the boxes(all win2kpro) using TCP/IP and file/printer share. If I enable file/printer sharing between boxes would that open it to the whole web?

By plugging the Cable Modem into the router and all your PC's into the built in switch you will be sharing the internet connection. That is the easy part. YOu still need to setup your fileshare etc. I am in the midst of pulling out all of my hair doing the same thing with my Cisco Router and a netgear switch. The internet shareing is the easy part!

I was thinking I would be able to leave my network settings the same but not sure. I should get the router here by Sat. and play with it. i haven't had any problems setting up shares in the past, but I like the way win2kpro networks better than any other windoze OS.

I am battling XP PRO to add a comp right now. 1 box can see the other but the other can't see the first.. Give my my WIN2KPro! Those were the days!

Have you created a network setup disk in XP Pro and run the "netsetup.exe" program on each of the other computers?

This should clear up the seeing each other problems:D

You don't absolutely need to see the PC in network neighborhood to get to it. You might be seeing domain issues and any number of other things going on there that can hide machines from each other in network neighborhood

to easliy move files from PC to PC - you can usually set up a share on the source PC and then reference the share by name from any other box on the network-

As you have an open internet connect - I highly implore you to password protect the share - or it may well be open to the world.

If you have a mix of NT and win9x boxes - the win9x boxes need to have file and print sharing loaded in their network settings . Also - you can reference the PC's host name and share folder and get there, even if it doesn't show in network places or network neighborhood, etc. etc.

go to [start] [run] and type in \\hostname\fileshare\ and hit enter - you should get the share login screen, hopefully,

if that doesn't get you there, then on the source PC - find the ip address and replace the host name with the ip address of the source box -

next piece - if your minihub has an uplink port on it - you can plug a drop from the router into the uplink port and have more PC's networked in on the same pipe as well as to each other - .

Have fun -

Most routers have built in firewalls so if you enable file sharing on the PC you can just set up the router in the firewall rules to block all traffic from the WAN to the LAN. SOme routers have a nice feature to block pings from teh WAN also, I like that a lot cause then you're not as exposed to hackers (i think).
