I run 98fe and would like to set up a home sever/ftp. I have these machines for possilbitly server use:
P-II 350 with 144 sdram one 13 gig Hdd
P-I 200mmx with 112 sdram two 2.5 gig Hdd's
10/100 mbps lan though a smc 4 port w/print server router, hooked up to adsl
{my P-II 450 is just for my gameing and busniess apps}
I have my lap top,{ P-I 133 } DX4/100, 486/66 on the lan also.
I've tryed apche for windows and got confused and screwed it all up. I admit I don't know what I'm doing, it's time to turn to the pro's and ask for help.
Thanks all.

This would be Mntsnow's dept., as I am still learning about Networks myself, sorry bud. Looks like you should have a gateway server that will allow ur other computers to access the internet. This is recommended for those people with high-speed connections, to prevent against hacker attacks to ur main puters, also see if u can't install a firewall onto that gateway server.
Which one to use for the gateway server? That would also be Mntsnow's dept.! ;)

PS. did the best I could for now:o

Well if you want to run a site very easily Try Foxserv. Very easy to install and will also install PHP, MySql and even Perl for you all in one shot. Download it and get even more help in the forums for it at http://www.linuxmax.net or the direct link to the download http://www.linuxmax.net/download.php?op=getit&lid=7 and then download a patch for the ini file (so you dont have to manually edit it. http://www.linuxmax.net/download.php?op=getit&lid=8

As for turning a machine into a gateway server the 486/66 will do the job just fine. Load up linux and run ipchains. Although I personally run a couple of soho routers for the family here at home. I use both Linksys and SMC's and I use a Cisco 2612 for the "business" side of things.

Sorry in the middle of fixing dinner for the kids,
Linux? ohno... I can't even get a floppy to mount in linux, let alone do anything else with it.
and what is a ipchain?

Well I know that their is a software "firewall" software that someone was swearing up and down about over at sysopt and techimo that is very easy to setup and configure...I'll see if I can find it for you

I recommend you try Norton Internet Security! There firewall has caught many hacker, and software intrusion attempts that ZONE ALARM missed...I've used ZA for a year now, so this kind of has me at a loss!

Sorry to hear that you had a rough time with Linux.....Linux does have a pretty steep learning curve. If you want to give it another try you might check into some of the "local computer clubs" as many of them will help you learn Linux for free :)

Sorry to hear that :( But yeah some of the "GNU""GPL" crowd are snobs and do more damage for the "*nix" user enviroment than MS does for Windows lol
