Well I found a sweet little application that made my MP3 collection so much more manageble and ENJOYABLE!
It's called "NetJuke" and is a PHP and MySQL database driven mp3 server that allows you to create multiple playlists with simple clicks of you mouse and has AWESOME search abilities to help you make your life easier. Check it out at http://netjuke.sourceforge.net/
Check it out as it works on any PHP/MySQL enabled server. I personally run mine on SME which was very easy to setup and is based on a secure version of RedHat 7.2 linux. You can download the ISO for SME at http://www.e-smith.org/downloads/
If you choose to install the above config as I have and need help just holler and I will be willing to help!

Question about this server mntsnow, Is it possible to make it so the mp3's play directly off the server? I mean, if I have the server based next to my home theater and have the server plugged into the stereo receiver, can I have the server web based to just click "play song" and it plays from the server and not stream to the PC?
Make sense?

I know you could on a Windows server. On the SME server I dont think so as it has no "gui" to it and no built-in support for soundcards (it's truely a "server server")

Hmm, well, I gave up on the Compaq server I was working on due to too many issues with various paths I chose. ;) I guess I will just have to save and get the twilight case you reveiwed, as it matches my newly modded PC and it will match all the black in my home theater, and make it a Windows server! :D
What you think of that? A good idea or no?

Well your dually would handle either OS :)
If you were doing a Windows server...
your new dually
OS = if you plan on serving more than about 5 people at any given time, Windows NT or Windows 2K server ( If under that amount 2K Pro or XP pro will be just fine as the pro versions have concurrent user limitaion)
Get IIS (windows webserver) configured and install PHP and MySQL (use my totorial that I wrote for installing PHPNuke on IIS servers for help on what to do. Its located in the "articles" section of the site) another great site that has helpful info on how to setup a server is www.dslwebserver.com
Load on your other applications you plan on using and start enjoying :) If you have other questions I will be happy to answer them in the future too :)

all my mp3 are on a 80gb hdd that has 3 partitions.
1-os
2programs
3-mp3
will i be able to connect the 80gb hdd to my hdd in the dually an copy the mp3 to the dually hdd?
if yes---do i just make the old hdd a slave to the new hdd?
will i be able to just copy the partition with the mp3 on it?

You could do that, but You could also just transfer all the mp3's over the network.

IIS is the windows webserver :) (IIS = Internet Information Server) You will configure this after you have installed the OS.
http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/sbs-wk2-pro-iis-web.html Will walk you thru setting up IIS on Win2K pro
http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/step-by-step.html is a list of other step by step totorials DSLWebserver.com offers

I'm not as organized as you guys :) I just put a Sun Multipack on my Ultra 2 and installed Samba. On any box on my mini network (including my Win98se box) I just point the mp3 player at that drive and play mp3's with the player set to "random play".
As an example this is what I do for the Win98se box to play mp3's...
For the first time ever firing up WinAmp I select the "add" button, then the "add directory" bit. Scroll down the list to the network, select the Ultra 2 (named jelly) then select the drive the mp3's are on. That's it, I'm listening to mp3's on Solaris over the network on my Windows box or whatever computer I'm on.
I'm not organized enough to make playlists :D Besides, any mp3's I have that I don't like, I delete.

hehe. Well Bill by doing that you take the reason out of me having more servers  lol
Seriously Your way works great if your not looking to stream your mp3 collection across the net... At my work they dont allow MP3's on the systems but they allow us to listen to streaming so now you know the main reason I built my own streaming mp3 server :)

Oh, I see. I've never been in that situation. I'd suggest Apache instead of IIS if you're on the web. The NT admins on my last job spent a tremendous amount of time patching up IIS every week. Of course they were dealing with about 4000 MS servers to my 1500 Unix boxes but I still feel they spent a disproportionate amount of time working on the IIS servers. Especially when you figure in the fact I spent almost no time working on iPlanet or Apache after it was configured.
The NT guys were always patching up something and it was usually IIS.

ABill how have you liked iPlanet? I've never used it but thought I might try it out on one of my dev boxes

Stick with Apache :D Even Sun is starting to use Apache.
