I sold the dually I built last week, and built another last night. To say I had problems with the mod is an understatement. This time the chips were 2000+ XP's....

I discovered something that can hopefully help anyone out there contemplating it.

The newer XP's have a varnish or some sort of coating over the laser cut bridge and the contacts themselves. I was using a conductive pen, and the CPU's would not show as MP's.

Today I went out and bought some lacquer thinner, and removed the conductive paste as well as the varnish. I used a Q-tip, and washed the coating right off. Then I used an exacto knife and scraped at the tops of the contacts...lightly...but enough to remove the coating..or what was left of it after the thinner. When all was dry and cleaned...the pen was used again..and voila!
posted as MP's
...HTH

Whoa, so now they're using a coating ? We didn't have that on my 1800 XPs

Correct. the same thing has been done to the clocking side of the xp's on the newer chips too

Well, AMD selling MP chips for almost double the price, I don't blame them for trying to stop users from modifying their XP chips to MP chips... I wish there was a way to get P4 to work SMP... Xeon boards are just way too expensive...

FYI: The new 333 MHz FSB AMD's are unlocked from the factory. I have verified this myself.

The coating is light and can be easily rubbed off with the same sharp object you use to drop the fluid with. The problem is just remembering to do it.
On a side note the XP1700 tbreds I got from newegg refurbed(used) run great at 1740 mhz at 160 fsb on my ASUS dual.
It is the first time this board has been past 150 fsb. I was shocked. For $35 they were a great deal.
I used 1.8 volts core.

I've scraped the coating off till I see bright shiny metal ... used a conductive pen (toothpick) to put a blob over the L5-4 and only the L5-4 ... still does not work ... posts as XP2000+

Did I need to be careful not to scrape the ditch caused by the laser? Does that substrate have to be insulated from the conductive trace???

Does show 2 system processors ... hit f1 to run in an unsupported configuration.

When I boot to W2003, only one processor is active, i.e. only one graph in taskman, although CPUID sees both!

Temps support that only 1 processor is active.
