Well here I go, within the next 2 weeks I will be getting my cable internet. They said it is 7 emails,20meg web storage,400 down/128 up for $28 a month. And they ask for $5 month modem rental or you can get your own. They said they had some types that work better than others but I forgot to ask which ones,so what are the better end cable modems and where's the best place to get one? Also I have a 4 port hub connecting 4 boxes that share internet dail-up now from my main box so what would be the best route to share internet with cable(low cost spent toooo much on Christmas).

I can get a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 cable modem for $50 shipped, Motorola CyberSURFR Wave Cable Modem for $20 shipped, Toshiba pcx 1000 cable modem for $40 shipped,Linksys EtherFast cable modem BEFCMU10 ver. 2 for $68 shipped

so should I wait til Mon. when I can find out from the cable company or they pretty much all a standard item? This will be my first cable internet setup :O Also should I replace the cable lines on my house for better service, I already run digital cable tv.

I dont have cable or know who your getting your broadband thru to even take a guess at what they will support....

If you can tell us who your carrier is going to be we can most likely find out what modems they support :)

Well Cable One is the name they have jus changed to from Time Warner Cable, hope that helps :) This is all new to me. Could I jus hook up the cable modem to my main box for now and share the internet like I am currently doing, til I get the $$'s for a cable router. There website for Emporia doesn't even show internet yet :) They called today and told me they were finishing the testing phase and would start my service within 2 weeks, they said so far there are only 20 some people subscribed at the present timeas this is a new service and most people are shelling out almost $70 a months for AT&T's DSL here or dail up.

I've read a couple of pretty good reviews on both the D-Link and the Linksys. Not sure about the others

I use the Motorola SURFboard SB4100, supplied by the Cable company. First one was a piece of scrap. Kept cutting out on me, had to unplug power cord and re-plug it back in to get it to work. Cable co. finally exchanged it and the replacement works fine.

I can pick up a D-Link (DCM-200) or a Linksys BEFCMU10 for around $40 + ship. I'm waiting on the cable company to come out an test my line. They laid allot of fiber optic around here to upgrade the cable system and some area's have older lines still. I live 2 blocks from the banking and business area so my hope are good.

It's not really helpful but just for info I just got cable with Time Warner and the modem they installed is the Toshiba (PCX2500). Weather good or bad I don't know but that's the default one they use so I would hope it's reliable.

I am a cable internet installer for AT&T, and my experience with cable modems is this:

Motorolla - I'm not a big fan, I swap out alot of bad ones.

RCA - 245(r) and 305 are good. The older models have too many power issues.

3COM - Pieces of musical crap, every time I'm issued these to install, I know its going to be a bad day.

Linksys - These are pretty good from my experience, though I've heard a few complaints.

Best Data - I haven't seen these enough to have a good opinion. Except that they're cheap and a no-name brand.

D-Link - they're not too bad, probably about the same as linksys to me.

Toshiba - Definately my favorite, atleast the pcx2200 and up. They are sleek, and so far reliable.

Note, if you are planning on starting with cable internet, do not use USB. Its a leaky dam of problems, always use the ethernet port on the modem.

As for the earlier question about replacing cables inside the house.. It would depend on the cable quality, you definately need to have RG-6 and not RG-59. Try to talk the installer into changing the fittings behind the wall plate if possible, few make the extra effort. But it does reduce signal egress and sometimes ingress.

Dan

I apologize for rambling, but its just my nature.
