i maybe getting an epox kp6-bs dual p2 mobo from someone that posted at techimo.(for 30.00).

my questions are:

where can i get the cpu and what kind for this mobo?(from low end to high end).

what video card can i use with this mobo?

i am not looking to spend a whole lot. i just want to use this as a learning experience.:)

i also need to know where to get the cpu and video card from.

Here you go

http://www.riva3d.com/reviews/epox/KP6-BS/

actually looks like it will support many p3's besides p2's :) You can pickup slot1 p2's & 3's pretty cheaply now days
(btw according to the CPU charts at Epox that board will support upto the 750mhz P3 using the 100mhz fsb chips :) ftp://ftp.epox.com/motherboard/support/Manual/cpu-support.pdf)

It supports AGP video cards so your off to the races there

btw here is the Epox page on it too:
http://www.epox.com/html/motherboard.asp?product=KP6-BS&lang=1

http://www.computersurplusoutlet.com/viewproduct.asp?ProductID=CPU-P3700E and then just use a "slotket" card such as these http://www.sysopt.com/reviews/slotket/#photos

ok. now i am in uncharted waters for me.(only built amd systems(.

i am going with the :

intel pentium III 700e FCPGA 256k 100mhz cpu(i need 2)
iwill slotket(i need 2)

i will assume that i need a heatsink and fan(somebody recommend something here)

now for installation questions:

put the cpu/heatsink on slotkey before i install on mobo? yes or no.

do i use artic silver 3? yes or no

everything else should install like an amd build? yes or no

if for some reason the sale of the mobo falls through can i use the same processors on another mobo?(somebody recommend some here).

if i use another mobo i won't need the slotkey? yes or no.

thanks for all the help

will assume that i need a heatsink and fan(somebody recommend something here) The Intel's run cooler than AMD's so even a retail heatsink and fan will work great on the 700's

now for installation questions:

put the cpu/heatsink on slotkey before i install on mobo? yes or no. Yes much easier to do that way

do i use artic silver 3? yes or no If you have it use it...if not just use the stock thermal pad/heatsink grease and you will be fine again the Intel's run much cooler than AMD's

everything else should install like an amd build? yes or no Yes

if for some reason the sale of the mobo falls through can i use the same processors on another mobo?(somebody recommend some here). Yes will toss a few other boards out when I get a moment

if i use another mobo i won't need the slotkey? yes or no. most likely the majority of other dually boards you would buy will be socket 370 so you would not use the slotket on those...the slotket coverts a 370 into a slot 1 configuration

Well I will suggest the following Intel p3 motherboards

MSI 694D (I have one and love it)
Gigabyte 6VTXD (Had one and sold it )
Abit VP6 (I had one and loved it)
Epox EP-D3VA (built several based on this board with great success)
ECS D6VAA (know a couple of people who have this one and have had great luck with it)
Tyan Tiger 100 (I think NDC has this one)
Tyan Tiger 200 (S2505) (just built a 1U rackmount server based on this board with 1.4gig Tulain processors!)
MSI Pro266TD MasterLR (MS-9105) (Raid)
MSI Pro266TD Master (MS-9105) (non Raid)

If you do some looking on Pricewatch and or ebay or the other forum's forsale threads I'm sure you can find one of the above boards rather quickly

I had an Asus CUSL2-C at one time. I loved the board and would recommend it to anybody. I ran a PIII 700, 100mhz fsb, a PIII 850, 100mhz fsb and a PIII 1 ghz, 133mhz fsb on it. No , not all at the same time lol.

Im loosing it, this is a single processor board  I got to start reading the threads a little better.

Asus boards are solid boards too :) Thanks Fshanda

Im running an Asus CUV4X-D here now with PIII 1ghz chips on it now. Its actualy my wifes workststion and she has been pretty pleased with the system so I would recommend it also. Good luck with the dualie. Dont worry it not that much different at all from building an AMD system and the Intel cores aren't as fragile as AMD cores.

Why are you talking flip chip, slot 1 CPU's hard to get? or find? It probably would pay off to look as I think they would be priced really resonable.

When I was looking for a dual P3 board the D6VAA board was priced really well ($60 new a yr ago) and the reviews I read gave it good ratings. Plus u wouldn't need a sloket the flip chips would fit right in.

I went the other way, all I knew about was Pentium, and I built an AMD duallie, I think going to a P3 or 2 would be a lot easier and u'll do just fine robin.

Mntsnow

Biff this all started out as a SLOT 1 config as the Mobo she was looking to pickup was a Slot 1 mobo :) Thats why I listed using slotkets so that the chips could be used in something else down the road ;)

oh, ok I see Mntsnow, I don't plan on having CPU's that long, but it never occured to me that others might...lol

I still stick with the ECS D6VAA though:)

That D6VAA board is a good one :) Glad it's treated you right too

Get some good HSF's for those 700's. Their good overclockers with good cooling. I used to have mine run at 850 without a problem. Your going to wind up with a nice system for a good price. And it will take a gig of ram too :D

robin801
12-14-2002, 8:37 AM
ok. start recommending some good HSF.

i am so excited about all this. can't wait to get all the parts.

Hehehehe the anticipation of putting a duallie project together, I can remember dat. Then there’s that awesome feeling of Great accomplishment when it boots up. Gonna put a big smile on ya face:)

Seems to me Robin like you got a good deal, I was pleased with my single P3-600 performance, your 700 duallie will rock!

Good luck

I was looking Here (http://www.glacialtech.com.tw/socket_a.htm) at the 2320 pro. It sells at NewEgg for $10.00 w/ free shipping, probably part of the special.

The thing I would be concerned about is the size of the hsf's. To big and you will hit the back of the one processor and or cover one or more of the dimm slots. Might want to wait untill you get the slotkets and cpu's and take a quick measurement. There are low profile hsf's that would fit for sure. I havent kept up lately with the new products comming out. Maybe someone else will have a better suggestion.

UPDATE:

i just sent a money order for 35.00 for 2 PII 350 cpu with heatsink/fan.

soon as i get them i will have everything i need to setup my new dually.

i feel like i hit the jackpot.(ok--almost)

now i have 2 slotkets that i don't need. :)

Mntsnow
12-27-2002, 11:12 AM
Well hang on to the slotkets as you might still use them when you decide to bump up the speed in that dually
