I have had Sprint for about 4 years. DSL has never gave me any problems at all.

Sprint changed to Embarq and I started having problems with my modem and wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) I called Embarq and they sent me a new modem. 660 Series.

I can connect to the Internet but after awhile the DSL cuts completely off. I am always having to restart my computer and router. I finally just had to take the Wireless router off b/c I never could get that to work.

I have called Embarq and Linksys. I have done all the changes they wanted me to do, I have went to their online programs they told me to use, I have ran virus scanners, and I have reformatted my computer.

They all work fine for about 45 minutes then the DSL just shuts off even though the light is still on.

Can someone please tell me how I can get my DSL to stay on and why my router and wireless router are not configuring together?

Please help save the life of my computer before I throw it out the window. Thank you.

Welcome to XPC Shygirl :welcome:

Sounds like a tricky one...

I suspect some kind of service or IP issue is at play. Have you tried turning DHCP off in your router and setting a fixed IP on your computer?

If this only started when Embarq took over it would point to something they are doing, but this could just be coincidence.

Next time it shuts off, try connecting to the router config in your web browser, most are 192.168.0.1 or something similar; if you can connect to the router but the router has lost the DSL then try opening up a console window and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) this should list the gateway address (the router) and the IP that it has given you, if you have no IP, then type "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew" this should force the router to give you a new IP adress.

Other than that, it's hard to know where to start, I'd be inclined to give Embarq another ring and start giving them grief. I very much doubt it's your computer thats causing the problems, more likely bad service and or Embarq constantly changing IP's on the DSL.

As to the wireless router, how are you connecting it to the router? What you may need to do is force the wireless router to use the same IP range as the normal router; you can either set a fixed IP and turn DHCP off, or so long as it's on the same IP range and subnet, it will be sent an IP from the normal router.

Not much point getting the wireless setup though until you've got the DSL connection working properly though...

As I said, it's hard to see where the problem lies and I don't know enough about the specifics of Embarqs DSL...

Hope that at least gets you started though :)

Run your Linksys in gateway mode instead of router mode. Sounds like your ADSL modem is acting as your router. Look under the general setup in your router settings.

There is a hole in the modem which have restart button , just restart the modem and then may be your problem will solve...
