At work some time (not always) we have got slow internet access, our internet connection through

How can troubleshoot where is the problem ? Is it with network or from ISP ? because some times I am pretty sure that the problem on our network, while other times with ISP

Our connection to internet through our PIX to ISP’s PIX .

We have got ADSL Line with 2 Mbps, I can say 50 users use net simultaneously .Web based applications we are running: ASP.NET, DB2.

hmm, this could be one of a couple of things really.

Broadcast storms (http://www.networkuptime.com/archives/2000/03/the_broadcast_s.html) could play an issue here, but more inportantly, 2Mbps over 50 users is not that fast. 50 users sharing a 2Mbps line will give each around 40Kbps around the same sort of speed as an old dial up connection.

One way to test your internet connection speed is by running an online benchmark test; there are plenty available, just do a google for 'broadband speed test'. Here (http://resources.zdnet.co.uk/speedtest/) is a typical one.

Where do I need to run this test ? Do I need to do it on random PCs ?

or I have to do it on specific one ?

I guess, try it on a server box first, or at least something that has network control, then try it on several machines randomly. Then compare results, if one particular domain (if you are running domains) is much slower than another, then that might give an indication of a problem somewhere.

You'll probably find that lunch time crawls to a halt as this is when most people mess around with the net and send emails etc...

What is the main problem you've been getting? Just slow internet, or say transfering files from one machine to another?

What sort of speed network do you have? if it's only say 10meg, then it will struggle with 50 or so users doing this and that. 100Meg should be the minimum really.

You could try and remove unused network protocols; if you only use TCP/IP and don't use IPX but it is enabled and vice versa, then remove the one that isn't used, this will help with broadcast messages, likewise, print servers (if you have them), generally come pre-installed with all network protocols installed and will broadcast messages on all of them, again remove the ones not used.

I'm guessing though that the main problem you have is with the internet, 2Mbps is just not fast enough to support 50 connections especially if they are all being used at the same time...

Thanks Win2Kuser

Yes, just slow internet

2Mbps is just not fast enough to support 50
I believe so,, see this :

Things to look for - spyware - good free scan site - www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan people running peer to peer nodes on the network? people running internet radio on the network? people running streaming video apps on the network? All of those can cause what you are describing..... Has someone in your office set up a kazaa or napster or bear share node?

Someone watching Greys Anatomy while at work? Someone have their favorite Saigon radio station pumping tunes and ads to them on your network?

That's what to look for - it'll bring you down in a heartbeat.....
