Since moving, I've been able to sign up for DSL with SBC/Yahoo DSl. Last night, I finally got all the stuff together & did the install.

First rant: PacBell sold me a DSL contract, set me up for a self install, & mailed me the stuff. I set up the line & it worked fine. The next day, a tech comes out & leaves me a message saying that it wasn't working & they'd have to come dig up my phone cable. I've tried to call back three times to say that it is working & not to dig up my street, but nobody will reply. So far this wire has been the best connection I've ever had.

2nd Rant: The Yahoo readme's claim that IE 5.0 would work, but that I'd be given the opportunity to upgrade to IE 6.0. In fact, it never asked me, and just did it. Considering the probs I had when last trying IE 6.0, I was very miffed.

But the SBC supplied Speedstream DSL Modem, my new Gigafast broadband ethernet router, and Smartlink 10/100 NIC all worked well together, and I was soon installed, registered, logged on, e-mailing & surfing just like those happy guys on the TV commercial.

Then I went to bed.... Big mistake.

3rd rant: I booted my PC this morning to get 3 errors: "vredir.vxd is missing", dfs.vxd is missing" and msn32s.dll (or something like that) is missing." I ignored it & got some coffee while it booted up.

4th rant When I tried to log on this morning, it would not connect. The messages told me that I couldn't connect to the "target server". Grrrrr..... The lovely-to-look-at Yahoo connection mannager GUI software was totally worthless at getting me on-line. I bypassed the router & it connected & logged on just fine. But my router was working just fine when I used it last night!

Crap! :(

<----disgruntled Yahoo customer, Cadd.

cadd, I sure wish you more luck than I had with SBC Yahoo. I was a Prodigy customer for years and was very satisfied. SBC Yahoo bought Prodigy and I dropped them soon after.

To have a look at the problems that I was having you can have a look at THIS THREAD (http://www.techimo.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39586) over at TechIMO. Not only did they not resolve my problem, they lied to me. Good luck to you.

Mike :)

HeeHee...I remember that thread ;)

I think I'm gonna reformat, just as soon as I figure out what settings I need to run. :D
The Yahoo software really is lame...

Sorry to hear bout your service with SBC Yahoo...I was wondering how they were support-wise, now I have an idea. :( BTW, I moved from Road Runner to Grand Communications (http://www.grandecom.com) after getting fed up paying $50/month for cable internet. Grande has a plan called Grande.NET 256K for only $26/month (unfortunately this provider only servies South Texas: Austin, San Marcos, San Antonio, and a few other smaller cities) Good luck to your future experiences with SBC Yahoo...

Thanks, guys.

I almost forgot the primary rule of windows pc maintenance:

When in doubt, remove & re-install ;)

HeeHee...Mholtum ;)

Well, that R&R fixed my error messages, and the peer-to-peer net is working fine, but I'm still having trouble getting on-line.

Evidently, the technician was right about a noisey line, & they'll be comming out to dig up the street tomorrow.

Funny thing though, connection to the SBC registration server was flawless. But now that I'm signed up & they can bill me, the connection is flakey as heck.

Does SBC do something "special" on the registration server to make sure that you get signed up, even when the typical signal is nasty?

Well, 8:00 AM they were out there with a jackhammer, digging up my neighbor's driveway to get at the phone cable.

Lucked out there, huh? :D

We'll see how the signal is when I get home tonight.

Yeah. On-line, but still on dial-up.

Got home. Big hole. No DSL yet.

More news tomorrow.

(If they don't cut the dial-up line ;) )

Thanks, SnowMan.

They were filling up the hole when I left for work this morning. Let's hope they don't screw it up in the process. ;)

Well I was going nuts all morning trying to get a cxonnection, and then trying to keep it.

When I came home this evening (after a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner, thank you ;) ) It logged right on, and seems stable too!

Maybe all those messages I've been getting about SBC'd crummy DNS were true? And they got it fixed?

Could I be so lucky?

I'm going to go fire up the other PC now & see if it gets on too :)
