I guess I'm the only one (so far) on the forum who thinks that bashing an animal's skull in with a bat is not a high form (or any form) of entertainment or humor.

I think it's sick.

Some sport... I guess the fact that it's just a cartoon makes it OK though. Bah.

madfish, you need to have Flash installed.

Come on now Socal. I'm not gonna ruin it for those who have not seen it yet but that was not what I found funny about it.

I have a strange sense of humor as you can see. This cartoon strip has been hanging on my cork board thingamajig since April.

Yeah I like Bloom County too. I have a bad habit of looking through the comics before reading anything else in a newspaper.

If I were to kill an animal it would be either in self-defense or for survival; not for sport and not for a sick joke, is my point, Epidemic. I used to shoot a compound bow in tournaments and I've shot many guns. I used to go shooting with my father in the woods where he'd go out for squirrels and porcupines and woodchucks for sport, Epidemic, when he wasn't hunting bigger game. I didn't shoot them, he did. I didn't like seeing animals die needlessly for sport so I stopped going out with him. Maybe that's because I love animals. I do like to fish. Maybe that is a contradiction.

I'm not a hillbilly. I grew up in a rural area and learned to shoot at a young age. I don't get on hunters' cases in particular if they take care to clean kill and not cause an animal to needlessly suffer BUT how often does that happen, hunters?

Yeah. those are cute and funny, fosin and jad. But there's a difference in my mind between what Epidemic posted and those comics.

Just me.

Look i agree with you, shooting animals for a sport is just sick, i also dont like fishing since you hurt a fish with that.

But dont forget the difference between a flash movie and reality.

I remember being called a sick person because i putted a joke on a forum that was a bit sick, but since it was a joke and not reality then i dont mind really, also lots of other people liked it but some didnt

I'm a Beverly Hillbilly LOL :D

Sorry bout the misunderstanding bout the hillbilly thing.
Just following your lead on that one.

That asside First off that whack on the head appeared to be a clean kill. Secondly it was a joke. Making fun of redneck hunters. In that it was uncool. But it was not about the abuse of the animal. It was funny IMO so I guess it is a personal thing.

Dang we have become such a bambi society. Lord help us if the economy ever really collapses. Most americans do not know where their steak comes from. I am not sure if I could even butcher an animal because I have been wussiefied by the media.

Socal

We can agree to disagree :)

I'm not sure how the rest of America would do, but if I was hungry and didn't have a supermarket handy, I'd have no problem killing (and dressing) an animal to survive providing I had the tools.

Here you go, Epi: FIELD DRESSING YOUR DEER (http://www.booktrail.com/Video_HuntAmericas/Field%20Dressing%20Your%20Deer.asp)

Here's one for preparation and all around survival. It's a cool site. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/food-5.php

May I ramble for a minute ;)

I live in an area where the closest neighbour is a mile in each direction. My kids walk about a 1/2 mile to the school bus at the end of the road.

I have hunted since I was 13 - which makes it 28 years -

The thing I am least proud of is the day I lost my patience with a squirrel - and killed him. And afterwards realized the awesome responsiblity. That was 26 years ago. I stopped hunting for about 5 years. and then started again, but with the outlook that I was a guest in this world and looked at it with the wonderment of a child.

Since then I have had to kill for food - I have taken nuisance animals on a rare occassion. Most were found to be diseased after I made a quick autopsy on them. And I have one right now on the list of problems for my kids. A bear that is making too many trips to our door yard when my kids are around.

I make every effort to distance myself from the baffoon hunter - because he is my poor example. but the one you all remember.

And for what its worth - when my daughter [this fall] - who is nine asked to go with me hunting for an afternoon. And she said she wanted to see us get a bird or such. I told her the story of the squirrel - and the day I lost my patience - and the fact that after going over that in my mind - for those five years before I went back into the woods. I promised myself that I would never do anything disrespectful to hunters or game ever again - Or I would hang my handguns and rifles up forever.

So far this year -my closest experience- has been 4 yards away from a yearling deer - and not taken a shot - because I was bowhunting - and I could not guarentee a clean shot.

I speak not because I am a holier than thow - type - just to explain - that in my opinion - many of us mature in our hunting. To the point of enjoying the whole experience - and enjoy the day with nature - but if the perfect shot appears - I have practiced enough to know it - and take it clean.

Have great day! C :)

If you want the best survival course offered on the planet... Do what I did. I joined the United States Army. I was 75th Ranger RMT. Now there is some training...

They teach you many, many ways to clean and cook most everything alive.

My son is following in my footprints.. PROUD DAD!

Socal...I can say I don't like killing animals for fun. But I have killed animals, for food.

In fact, in my early teens, in the woods of Palatka Fl, I grew up on pretty much having to hunt for food. Squirrels, bird, rabbit, etc... even deer. Even fishing, catching crab, casting for shrimp...anything I could. If not, I wouldn't be eating as good for a few days ( we werent exactly rich, with a drunken redheaded boilermaker stepfather ) so anything was a blessing.
Yep, I've cleaned them too...that video would have been a good thing to have back in the day.

As for now, I don't even like the taste of wild meat...deer, etc. I pet deer at natural reserves and such. So, one one hand I can agree with you, but on the other, it's a natural part of life as much as eating that steak is at a restaraunt. It's not right , and it's not wrong...it's just the way it is.

I'm ok with that, but this one was just a joke.

I know you had it pretty tough growing up BBA. As I said before, I have no problem with hunting for survival. You survived by your wits as well as by your hunting skills and I certainly don't fault you or have a problem with that! We do what we have to do to survive.

I'm not gonna beat this topic into the ground anymore (ok.. bad pun lol) as I've really said all I want to say about it :)

mholtum, congrats on your son's enlistment to the Armed Forces and, as his fellow countrywoman, I thank him for his service to us and our country. You should be proud! Thank you as well, Veteran! :) I believe you that the military has got to be one of the best, if not the best, of survival training there is.

Your links aren't working for me though - I can't see the pics :(

*hmm.. I'm able to see: http://www.whitetaildeer.com/howto/fd/ but it appears it might take a moment or two longer to render on a slower connection.

The first link (http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/hunting/game.html) - Good link, jad. Very thorough and detailed instructions.
