If at all!
Using windows Defragger, or something else?

I put monthly, but in reality, some machines are more like weekly, but with the general use now and again machines, monthly is enough, and nine times out of ten, windows reports that the drive doesn't need defraging anyway even though it might be 50% fragmented or more!
I have diskeeper v10 run every evening at 3AM, but only one drive partition a night as there are 4 partitions so it rotates between each one and is done before I get up for work. Diskeeper is a great defrager 500% or better then windows defrag and much faster.

Monthly, although it tends to be longer at times... it also depends on which harddrive, my old 40 gig hasn't been optimized in atleast a year.
I personally use Perfectdisk 7.

Couple times a week. With all the downloading and deleting of porn, I have to... LOL Kidding..
Seriously Couple times a week.

Probably annually, even less if I reinstall winders on my son's box every six months. :P
Since I save all file onto a file server, I don't really see the need for defrag on my main machine as I rarely install new progs or save much on it.
I probably should defrag the file server regularly, but.... :o

I doo mine monthly with a pre built CD with a boot windows environment. Not only does it move the MTF, it also moves the system files that could not be moved. Really nice and speeds it up. On the last day of the month, or my birthday which is after that, I will defrag. Takes about 4 hours on two drives.

The "what's defragmenting" option is for those who don't use it i think. ;)
You arnt married are you?
Nope, but you can always hide it, and unless you got a wife or a girlfriend who is a computer expert, then they will never find it. ;)

I voted annually, although its more like every 6 months. I really should get into the habit of doing it every month or so but I 'm pretty lazy about maintainence, I 'll just do it when I notice a slow down.

I use disckeeper professional as well, the windows one is crap. Ive got it set to defragment whenever my screensaver is running, keeps all the machines happy.
The differance before and after on the machines that I service is VERY noticeable as well. Those that think you dont need to should really try a GOOD defragmenter sometime. If all you have to use is the windows one you might just as well not.

Not sure if the WinXP one is exactly the same as the old Win9x one... but that one was a joke... a real piece of work...
anyone ever have troubles with it where it would start & as soon as it'd detect drive usage it would restart the process, when in reality it was the one using the drive? so it would never get completed?
I'll usually defrag only when I really need to, which is just about never... but i'm lucky if I do it once or twice a year, usually a reinstall of the OS happens before I need to, in that case, I always wipe the drive clean first before installing the OS...

Downloaded the trial version of diskeeper Pro and had that running last night on this machine, haven't really noticed any markable difference in speed though, and this drive was pretty badly fragmented. For me, o&o degrag works better, but then I've had more time playing with that whereas I've only been messing with diskeeper for like a day...
I'll give it until the 30 day trial finished then decide how it performs agains o&o...

Monthly, usally, but I use the kids box for all my stuff now and been playing guild wars, that messes up the Hdd alot, so it's been once every day, with the option to defrag offline before windows starts.
O&O Defrag Pro v8.0.. they keep bugging me to upgrade to v8.5 Pro. I see no need too.

I voted sometimes. Although, really, if I think about it - I haven't done it in a couple years. As many times as I reformat/reinstall, I've never made it to the point to have to defrag.

Sometimes. Weekly is probably more accurate. I defrag based on what kind of stuff I'm doing. If I'm installing lots of stuff, especially mods or patches for games, deleting files, etc. etc., then I'm gonna defrag more. I try to just do it when I need it, but often enough that it only takes a few minutes when I do it.
And I just use Windows. I don't really see a need for third-party software. It's like Norton Ghost or something--you're paying money for a functionality that's built in to Windows.
I try to do it monthly, but usually I end up doing it about every 3-4 months. It takes so long too, so I often do it overnight.
Sometimes, because it rarely needs it. I used to do it once a month, when I used to install and try out different programs. Since I quit doing that, it usually only says it needs it about every 6 months or more.
I just use windows own defragger.

Disk Keeper 2007 version. Set it and Forget it setting.
Don't think defragmenting improves performance that much on NTFS as it did in the FAT32 systems.
But I may be wrong.

the only time i defrag is after a OS, and apps fresh install. mainly to make it so i can lock the pagefile in a good location (note: that i'd have it set to zero during dfrag). once the pagefile is reset to 768/768. thats it if its a cruncher box...
on the main box and laptop it can vary, might be a daily to a weekly thing. usually i just defrag after deleting the temp files from either wmp, flash or java or what is on myspace. and then defrag takes only seconds.
steam or any online game (especially if it updates constantly) fragments the partition it's in almost instantly and causes a need to defrag....

I maybe defragged twice in my entire lifetime.. I'm just too lazy. I reinstall my OS a lot though, so that probably is why.

I know this has been a while, but it deserves a good bump, considering...
I am in the process (a long one) of defragging :P

What about the answer,"Never." I have been using Linux for a couple years, so I don't have to worry about fragmentation.
Don't be enslaved to the Steves, toss off your chains and join the open-source movement.
I don't have to worry about viruses, I have tons of software to play with, and if I want to play video games, I only have to leave the virtual XP machine on for as long as I want to play the game.
