im thinking about going wireless...linksys has there 802.11b router/station for $80 now as they are coming out with a dual a/b band router. since im only on cable (2.4 mbits) would it make any sense to get the dual band? or should i just wait for awhile longer...something different coming.

Call me old fashion but until I truly have the need for wireless I will stick with good ole' cat5e and have tons more "pipe" at a cheaper price and then not worry as much about security of my bandwidth either :p

yeah i was thinking about wireless, until one day i was at a bbq at my friends place and the neighbor came over with his laptop trying to access the internet with his laptop, he tried to get his wireless network, but instead some how connected to someone else's wireless network.
this made me a little worried, so i sticked with good ole cat-5.

You know, I started to laugh but after thinking about it for a while....this ain't such a bad idea. I want to get the laptop back up stairs for the wife. I could run a long cable up there following the cable tv wire. Hmm. That would do it too and would be cheaper than wireless.

I made a 35 ft cable that I can snake from the front home office into the living room - plug in my laptop - I have a piece of lumber to set on my lap that is 1.5 times as wide as my laptop so I have space for my mouse ( I hate stubs ) and I've got speed and connectivity..... also - the laptop gets hot after a while...
There is so much salvaged LAN cable laying around from so many projects, you can usually find a nice long un-kinked piece - then you just need 2 RJ-45 jacks and a crimp -
you can find several on-line references to get the wiring right - but here it is in a nutshell -
orange white
orange
green white
blue
blue white
green
brown white

those are in order left to right as seen from the bottom of the RJ-45 connector - i.e the side that doesn't have the tab on it.
the best method I've found is to peel back the insulation sleeve without cutting into the twisted pairs - untwist about 2 inches of cable and sort them into the above order - hold them flat close together in one hand and cut them off flush leaving about half of an inch of wire beyond the primary insulation. You want the main insulation to seat into the RJ-45 jack so that the connector holds onto the end of the insulation, not the twisted pair wires alone.
note that there is no need to cut back the insulation on the individual twisted pair wires, the crimp will dig into the wire if done properly.
here is another note - the above is a regular network cable -
To make a cross-over cable to connect two PC's without a hub, simply swap the orange and green pair at one end - this crosses the send and receive pins so two NIC's can talk to each other - a GREAT way to transfer data quickly between two machines when you are updating or migrating small amounts of hardware or network gaming between 2 PC's - I've also taken 2 spare RJ-45 connecting blocks to make a "cross-over block" - so any 2 PC's with regular network cables can connect.
so much for wireless -
