i have 2 systems connected to a router(linksys befsr41). i have dsl modem.

i have spent the last 2 days trying to file/print share.

i have looked at practicallynetworked and i am more confused now than ever.

doesn't having them both connected with the router connected to the internet make them networked?

if i want to share file/print wouldn't this be a file/print server that i am trying to setup?

everything that i keep reading seems to be about connecting the 2 systems together so they can share the dsl connection so that both can be online.

can someone point me in the right direction before i need a wig from pulling out my hair?:(

You need to make sure you have "file & Printer sharing" turned on in the Networking properties, And then from there make sure both computers are using the same subnet in the IP address and make sure you have something shared and make sure you have them in the same "workgroup" along with the exact same spelling (ie spelling and CaSe).

BTW what OS's? If one of them is XP HOME edition then thats your problem....XP Home is not networkable for file Sharing

i am using win98 on 1 system
win2k on the other system.

can u tell me how to determine what my "IP RANGE" is?

i have zone alarm and i need to set this in "trusted zone"(i think)

If your using 192.168.1.xxx as your ip's then in Zonealarm you would set the "range as 192.168.1.xxx & the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 which would allow all the .1.xxx adresses.

thanks for the help.

i am now able to see both computers and they can share files.

the only thing is they can't share a printer. the printer is connected to my win2k box.

if i try to share it needs win98 drivers and asks for win2k server cd.(which i don't have. i only have win2k professional)

if i connect the printer to my win98 box will i still need to have win2k server to have the win2k box share with the win98?

i hope i asked that right.

If you have the printer on the Win98 box it will work...you will just need to install the driver for Win2K on the win2K box.

you can also just manually install the win98 drivers on the win98 box and still use the printer while connected to the 2k box
