java?

i'm running mozilla, the latest build, and for the last week i've been trying to install java, but it doesnt work. like say i go to a website that needs java, i get ,click to get he plugin,so i click it, get a popup that gives me the opition of either windows/linux. i choose windows, since i'm running w2k. it download, it installs all fine. i close the browser.
restart the browser.
and it still installed.
i've tried closing the browser before install and same thing! i'm stumped. where have i gone wrong?
