She's putting it all together...and the fan I sent her isn't working right. I think the wire splice I did to the speed switch in order to add a double power conector may have came undone.

Hehe... good luck indeed...
I'm sure it will boot up fine at the 1st try!!!

Thanks but I've got too many problems already. :(

New dually build;
Tyan S2466N-4M
1.2G (2) MPs
Volcano 7+ on each proc.

I'm testing as I go along. I have procs, HSF and PSU testing. I power on and the Volano fans spin .. then like <10 secs later, the sound of the power increases then the entire power shuts down. No beeps.

What is wrong?

I have the procs fans 3-pin connectors each properly plugged into mobo, and the drive connectors plugged into the PSU drive connectors.

ps. I went out and bought a new Volcano 7+ to replace BBAs as I didn't want to mess with it.

Still need help with above problem.. thanks...

When I plug in the first 3-pin (yellow wired) connector directly from the HSF (on each) and remove the speed controller part, the fans do not spin up.

** Edit. NM. I gave the system to NDC. I don't have the time or patience for this anymore.

Thanks anyway.

Well, got the system shutting down in 10 seconds figured out. However, it appears that both of the MP's are dead. I found it rather strange that the heatsink was stone cold even when the system was left on for a few minutes with no post. I pulled the chips off my system and slapped it on and it fired up. However, after shutting it down, it recognized only one processor on reboot. After a few more reboots, the second processor would show again. It appears that the CPU socket #2 was defective and Socal will be returning it for a new one... :(

I want to send major props and thanks to NDC for taking the time out of his busy schedule to help me. He went way beyond the call of duty.

We even went to Fry's and bought two new, retail 1800 XPs (and NDC modded the L5s to make them MPs :D ) but still had the same problem with CPU2. Even a BIOS flash failed to help.

At least I know it's not me that's nuts. Even though this is making me nuts.

Anyway, thanks again NDC :) And folks, he has got one NICE LOOKING dualliie lol! :)

If I ever need help, I know who to call.... errr wait a minute... CA ==> London... nah... too far away :)

NDC

Well, stan, you could always ship it to me! Just don't expect me to ship it back to you. Depending on the system specs, I may just decide to keep it! :D

And although I have never damaged the core on AMD processors, I know many people who have including socal's last system. I wonder why AMD doesn't make their processors like P3's 1Ghz where the core is covered with a mirror finish steel shim? Not only does that spread the heat nicely because of its larger contact, it protects the core like an armor... I seriously think AMD chips have a very fragile core seeing numerous people damaging their cores from simple tasks such as slipping the heatsink on and off.

Stan
09-30-2002, 3:02 AM
Could be one of the reason AMD CPU are cheaper than Intel... That's one way to keep manufacturing costs down.

Mntsnow
09-30-2002, 7:36 AM
Yep. :(

NDC
10-01-2002, 8:58 AM
Well, I thought about that, but not all Intel chips have this shim, not even all the P3 1Ghz and they are still more costy than AMD chips... I believe Intel prices have more to do with the name rather than the cost of marketing them?

Stan
10-01-2002, 10:09 AM
True... just the name "Intel" on the chip add a few % to the price...
That's the same with everything else. But then again, it is just a name... and a big name does not make sthg run better or faster.

I wander... if I write "Nike" on my trainers... will I run faster?? mmm... must try tomorrow am...

Socal

Hey, where is all that "good luck"? I'd better get some tossed over here! lol

I RMA'd the Tyan and a new one has been FedX'd to me. (Thanks, Sterling at Monarch, for the shipping credit.) I also now have (2) 1800 XPs modded to MPs (thanks, NDC, for the fine conductive pen-work :busted: )

I also returned those PITA Volcano 7+s.. man.. those things were kinda hectic to get on and they are very heavy. Also, all the wiring on and to the speed control... ahhhh! Just give me a simple HSF. please! lol

So, the XPs came retail with the stock HSF. I will not be OC'ing so does anyone see a problem using the retail HSF - or any increase of heat by modding to an MP?

:bunny:

Mntsnow
10-01-2002, 9:53 PM
The retail heatsinks will work just fine

I've tried new everything just to get this thing to POST and / or beep properly...

new mobo
new modded XPs
new RAM
2 new PSUs

only thing left is the vidcard. This new board's AGP slot is very sloppy.. I don't like. my G400MAX flops back and forth in it and it won't seat tightly.

i'm wearing out my tread driving to fry's and back, and i have no life left.

10-05-2002, 5:41 PM
Im sorry to hear about your misfortunes. I have only built MSI AMD dualies and they went together without any problems at all. Trying a new vid card wouldnt hurt. I hope you figure all of this out and join the club soon. Do you have any PCI cards you could try just to get it to post?

Biff
10-05-2002, 6:27 PM
You get any kind of beeps Socal? or just nothing happens on startup?
Biff

Socal
10-05-2002, 7:07 PM
Hey guys.. thanks for the replies.

Nothing happens. No beeps, no POST. I get beeps if I remove RAM.

Doesn't matter anymore.. I've had it, this build has kicked my butt and I am through. Thanks for the help, but if NDC isn't able to put it together, all the sh*t goes back. I've maxxed out my dang card buying new parts to test. Enough is enough!

Socal

Hey..

Well, NDC did indeed get it running.. I don't know how or why because he didn't do anything different than I did, unless it was switch procs on their sockets ...

I can't get the Secondary drives to be recognized in the BIOS now. Checked jumpers, and tested on a known good IDE ribbon.

*sigh* ..

NDC
10-06-2002, 12:07 PM
Well, first thing I would suggest is to try resetting the BIOS to default through the BIOS screen. No need to do this by resetting with the CMOS Clear Jumper... Local Bus IDE should be set enabled for Both, but you never know.. so try resetting it...

When/if the HDD(s) are recognized at post, you can set the following...

1. Change to Enabled for the IDE Transfer Mode

2. Change the AGP Aperture to 128MB

3. Change to Enabled for the AGP Fastwrite Override

4. Change the Parallel Mode to EPP. I don't use ECP because I saw no advantage when using a DMA channel using ECP mode on a SMP system. I just see no point in occupying a DMA channel.

Mntsnow
10-06-2002, 12:17 PM
Try leaving everything set to DEFAULTS in the bios (only make REQUIRED changes such as for the HD's and boot order)

From BIOS HardMon:

CPU1 43* C
Fan RPM: 5273 ±
CPU2 46* C
Fan RPM: 5443 ±

Indeed, you did, NDC :) .. .well I dunno.. I was gonna do that too, but you stopped me. I think she just likes you ;)

NDC
10-06-2002, 1:02 PM
And you won't see much more than 3~4C in temperature using that tank heatsink you got from Fry's either... That thing weighed like 40 grams a piece I bet! lol

And once you get the OS, APPS, and tweaks setup, be sure to make a Ghost Image. Here is what I have on my single HDD for emergency or when I feel like switching OS on my duallie... I've never like having more than one OS installed on my system. people with multiple boot systems amaze me... Maintenance for this one system along with two other systems is more than enough for me...

Win2k - OG - Registry not cleaned
Win2k - Registry Cleaned

XP Pro - OG - Registry not cleaned
XP Pro - Registry Cleaned without SP1
XP Pro - Registry Cleaned with SP1

Switching or recovering OS is easy as about 15 minutes of my time because I keep these images handy disconnected from the system... :)

:D Funny you should mention that NDC. I just pulled some blank cdr's out to use nero, and burn an image of my c drive, just in case I lose a partition again!! Glad to hear She's up, and running SOCAL!!!!! To bad she's a female, and like's to give you a hard way to go!!!!!!! lol

That was probably one of the wisest things you could do after doing a fresh install while the registry is still clean. Windows registry can get quite ugly after a period of time and there is no way you could clean it up the way it was right after the fresh install, not even with all the registry cleaners that people rave about...

Well, I've been installing and tweaking stuff all afternoon and still prolly only halfway done.

I've got a Unknown " PCI Bridge" that keeps wanting to install.. not sure what that is yet.. didn't have it before, so I assume it's something to do with the new board.. ?

Also, I tried a quick image resizing and also a liquify on a couple images in PS and .. it's pretty fast ;) I wish I had timed it before on the 1.2G T-Bird so I'd have a comparison. It's noticeably faster though, and one resizing was ... .almost instantaneous lol.. so it's pretty quick.

I'm sure with some more tweaking it will pick up a notch or two more.

I'm just sooooo relieved this thing is up and running now you just don't know! I feel like I can leave the house again lol... :bunny:

Glad to hear you're up and running with the new build socal, now you can get your life back huh? I noticed photoshop just cooks on the biffbox, poser renders quicker, but like you I didn't time the old setup for comparison renders.

I've got a Unknown " PCI Bridge" that keeps wanting to install.. not sure what that is yet.. didn't have it before, so I assume it's something to do with the new board.. ?

Install the AMD Chipset Driver (ftp://ftp.tyan.com/chipset_AMD/) for Windows 2000 and it will install the right driver on reboot...

Download IDE and Power Management...

Drivers (http://www.tyan.com/support/html/drivers_support.html)

Note for Windows XP Users: You will not need to install Power Management under Windows XP...

I wish I had timed it before on the 1.2G T-Bird so I'd have a comparison.
