View Full Version : XP Network Browsing = Slow?
When I check my network places from my XP machine, it seemingly takes forever for the network window to show the other computer(s) shared drives.
The other systems are
(2) win98se
(1) win2k pro
When browsing the network from the other computers, they can see my XP machine as fast as if it were a local drive for them.
I seem to remember a thread a long time ago about speeding up network browsing in XP, via a registry entry or two? Else, what can it be?? TIA!

Look and search in the Tips & Tricks forum. It's in there :)

:)
Ok, so I deleted that key last night, and the network browsing is faster. But there's still a noticeable lag for the shared drives to show up. Is this just an inherent thing with XP?
I can map the drives from the other systems, and they will show up fairly quickly on the XP machine, but browsing the network for the share drives still has a lag.

Part of the slowness is NT checking for file permissions and so forth
Yeah, looks like it. Oh well, sacrifice speed for security :z

Yep :) but atleast once you have connected and started the file transfers they fly right along :)
I just ran the windows update for XP SP1, and it TOTALLY FIXED UP MY SLOW NETOWORKING!!!
The Network Places shows the other computers immediately, and clicking on them shows their shared drives immediately! No more annoying delays!
XP SP1 WAS WORTH THE WAIT!
:bday: <--- what the heck, it's a celebration ;)
