You recently bought a brand new drive? Is it fast? It may get faster!

Most drives today ship with some sort of accoustic managment enabled to keep noise levels low. This has an impact in performance ranging from 4-20% depending on the level of noise suppression.

All HD companies have software that changes the level of suppression and/or completely disables the management. This will make a significant change to your drive. It will be faster, louder and hotter.

If you feel unhappy with the new status you can revert to the one before of caurse.

NOTE: This is only for advanced users that are able of command line instructions are are aware of basic HD principles. READ ALL DOCUMENTATION that comes with the utility and/or the HD before attempting anything. Eventhough this is a risk-free operation for the experienced user, I (or Mntsnow forum in general) take no responsibility if you damage your HD.

Now that you read the above, you can look at your manufacturer's page for the utility.

For Maxtor (that ships all drives with the managment on) you can get the utility here (http://www.maxtor.com/products/diamondmax/techsupport/technicalprocedures/21007.html)

Happy tunning (and stay safe!)
