this just started this morning. I have a dial-up "solid 48 kbs"

when I go to log onto the connection. I get to the opening screen of it seeing my username* passward. and it just stays there.

dose nothing. if I reboot the system. it works fine.
this only happens it I leave the system on and not shut down & reboot/

system is running 2k pro, have checked the network dial-up settings ect. nothing has changed ??

What kind of modem? Internal or external? Which Motherboard and what slot is it in if it's an internal modem?

A Open FM-56P ,,
pci internal on slot 3,
com 3 "will only work on this one "
irq 10
mobo Abit BX6 rev. 2.0
o/s NT 2K pro
Memory 256
cpu p3-450

in device magager. all is clear and no error's ect.

Might have to uninstall & reload it with?? I'm also useing the modem drivers & not the 2k o/s ones!

I can now only get a speed of 3100 and sometimes it won't even connect at all!!

and when I do log off or disconnect the modem. it takes forever for it to release the connection and some times it just sits there ???

I have to go out and it is also Raining here real bad. so, will get back to you on this at a later or safer time!!

all I need is for it to get lighting struck. but, that would most likely cure all of my problems ect. !!

what modem model is it? Who made it?

What else is running as listed in your task manager screen?

Here are the three most likely things I believe might be happening.

The internal modem isn't resetting properly -
The system is running out of resources -
You have a corrupted dial-up networking "connectoid" that needs to be rebuilt.

By chance is your modem a "Winmodem or a Softmodem"?

These are inexpensive modems typcally under $40 that are internal and make use of the central processor to run commands instead of have a full chipset and running all the compression calculations independant of the central CPU. They are therefore harder on system resources and don't work well with other applications running in the back-ground.

The best recommendation I make to people who use their modems a lot is to spend the additional $25 and get an external modem. You can see the LED lights on it's face and figure out what it's doing. Also - you can turn off it's power and reset it without having to recycle the entire computer. Also - there's no such thing as a win/soft modem in an external format - as far as I know anyway..... Don't forget to get the com port cable when you buy the modem, they aren't in the box.

The worst excuse I've heard not to is because they don't want any more wires or boxes and want it all in one box..... I.E. looks over function.....

problem is fixed now. or it seems to work ok ?? as for the modem types. I have just about all manf. internel & externel.

from what I can get out of this is. that I ran. I know I was stupid on this call. I ran one of those hdd file cleaners. and some how it cleaned out a lot of my needed files software/hardware ect.

it got to the point that I couldn't even get past the opening screen of 2k or 98se. and so with the help of bootdisk!! I was able to get into them and have it restore my files from the recycle bin.

only problem now. is if I install the 2k drivers for the modem. I'm right back to where I started from. when time permits me to do so.

I have got to do a reinstall of all my drivers, service packs ect.

I did notice a lot of my problems ect. started a while back when I went to sp 2 f/2k, had to uninstall it!!
