It varies widely. The model of laptop will help to rdetermine this. There are two interfaces and a variety of mounting methods. These range from hot, warm and cold swappable units to models that have to be disassembled to change drives.
Saw this post this afternoon, but was at work on constrained bandwith (Private T3).
You probably could add most any peripheral you wanted thru the exterior ports. BUT... to replace say a CD with a DVD burner, is no problem computer-wise, but the problem is getting it to fit in the hole...... You could go back to the manufacturer and see what is available, cuz most manufacturers are not compatible with others - ie: Toshiba lap DVD won't fit in a Dell lap, or vice versa. In Laps, you are talking about more of a physical match-up than electrical. Again, if it fits in the hole, it just may work......
Check the manufacturer 1st
Good luck
Thanks for your replies Xaotic, and ski52.
Do you by any chance know of any web sites that specialise in Laptops?
