View Full Version : Slow Network Speed...

Hey all,

My network seems to be quite slow. It has a neatgear gs105 GigE switch for use with my two computers. I transfer a lot of files back and forth (hence my use for GigE) but file transfer rates seem to be much, much slower than they ought to be.

I have a windows box with integrated Gigabit LAN [I guess it's a Realtek chipset] and a linux box running samba with an intel pro/1000 MT desktop version. I average a rate of about 4-5MB/sec, but I think it should be much higher. It has taken me up to an hour just to move files of equivalent size back and forth.

Any idea on what's going on?

off the top of my head, make sure they are updated drives, and each side is set to 1000 not auto.
maybe verify your cables are cat 5 e ??

have you defragged your drives lately? What are your drive ratings [rpms, transfer rates]?

Agree ^ Hard drives cache size and RPM are the most common cause of slow transfer rates.
