I wanted to build a PC for my daughter to take to college but I believe I have run out of time because of working so much. Anyway, is this a good deal or can you recommend something better? We have a sales tax-free weekend until 8/4, and I can get this PC at BestBuy without sales tax and shipping until then -- but I don't want to rush out and still spend too much money. $850 is really tops for my budget but I don't want a Celeron system either.

Aside from the fact that I didn't like the modem or the operating system, it doesn't look too bad for the price, multi-media-performance-wise.
But the hard thing is that they never tell you who makes the hard drive, the motherboard, the video card, PSU etc.
You can buy some very cheap stuff nowadays, and this PC is probably loaded with it.
The good thing might be that if there is a Best Buy where she's going, she can get it RMA'd if it croaks.

I say go for it, although it doesn't include a monitor from what I read on the site and that will cost you atleast another $150.
Would she rather have a laptop? Portability, etc? This is usually what us college students would rather go for. You can get a decent P3-m for around ur budget.

From what I have heard on campus, the problem with laptops is baby sitting it. If you are eating lunch or at the library and need to go to bathroom, you must take it with you if you want to keep it. The security issue seems to be a real hassle.
I have a 10-year old 17" Seiko monitor with very few hours of on-time that is sharper than 90% of what I have seen in the stores lately. I plan on putting it to use.

Well, then definately go for it. I checked out vprMatrix's site and it seems like a respectable company. Esp since Best Buy sells there computers...which reminds me: I went to DELL's website to check up on an equally configured desktop and their's cost more by about $200+ ... so you've got a deal right there.
I mentioned lappy's only because that's what most of my friends have. I prefer desktops because you get more bang for the buck obviously, and for several other reasons.

Sweet! :)
Hope it works! :p I also hope she enjoys using it as well, the specs should keep her up to date for a year or so, hehe.
