I think it would be a great addition if there was a merit system based on helpful posts, quality posts, etc...

These could be awarded by admin, mods, etc...

To compliment to merit system, add a store where we can buy sigs, custom avatars, titles, etc with our points.

Yeah We had something like this over at Explosive Labs, unfortunately Me & a few otehrs never noticed it until it was almost too late, I had like over 1,000 points added up over there, never did use any, but I think I opted to donate 100 or so points to one of the noobs over there once as well.

& MX6.com has something similar, Reputation points or something like that, that gives you extras you can use your points for, or on mini games in the sites dedicated Flash based arcade section for members only, stuff like that.

Yeh, an arcade would be cool also.

Interesting idea, but I wouldn't support it, myself. Why? the sites I've seen that have these tech reply merit systems are full of fights about who said what and what reply was best. There were threads full of arguments that mods had to clean up. :o

I think the system we have here is OK as it stands myself. If you have an idea about how to answer a question, you post it, no strings attached. ;)

Cheers

i am dead-set against it...a real BAD idea.

one of the most refreshing things about XPC when i joined was that there wasn't a lot of emphasis on posts counts, titles or anything.

you were able to have an AV with a very modest # of posts (didn't matter where you posted for it to count ) and you could change your title without much of a requirement too. once you start looking at post counts as a way to distinguish or reward members, IMO you start running into trouble.

IOW, you run the risk of more spam and stupid posts from people trying to up their count. if you want to participate in the board's threads (whether it's a help question or it's something else), do it because you want to...not because you expect to gain from it.

Only reason It worked over at EL is we had such a small amount of dedicated posters over there, one was me another, Leviathan may know from HCW, was Flunk, & several others, also one a handful actually knew about the points system, so thats the only reasons it worked if you can call it that over there.

John, the system I'm talking about would have nothing to do with post count or even how long the posts are, only how good/helpful the higher up's deem them to be. I think it would encourage experienced members to help as much as possible. Take for example, myself, the only reason I go into a particular forum is to post questions and in the rare instance that I run into someone else's thread and I know a fix for their problem then I may or may not post a suggestion depending on how I feel. Being rewarded for it, however, would deffinately change things. I know, I'm such a capitalist *******!!! LoL.

There is a "Reputation" system that is off by default. Easily turned on.. Ask Mike.

I choose not to use it. I have seen it be abused way to much unless it's only in the hands of the Admin/mods and then it's very time consuming for Admin/Mods to rate people and then you have people that get ticked off cause they think they should have a higher rating that so and so and then that starts a whole other issue....

Yeh I suppose this is true, just not enough mature people in the world I guess.
