i have a linksys befsr41 router connected to a dsl modem. i went out yesterday morning and when i got back home i couldn't get back on line.

i have changed every setting in the router and reset i don't know how many times.

i have unplugged the modem and the router and still nothing.

my system shows that it is connected but when i try to connect in the setup box of the router i get either (can not connect to pppoe server or pppoe authentication fail) error.

i have tried the setup with pppoe enabled and disabled.
i have tried with dhcp enabled and disabled.
i have tried with a username and password.

i just don't know what else to do.

i have 2 systems and a laptop connected to the router.

if i call the isp they won't help me because it is not directly connected to the modem.

i am using win2k on my system.
isp is earthlink.

doe anyone have any ideas?

I have a similar system at work with 10 stations. Every time there is a problem with this setup, it turns out to be on the teleco's end. That doesn't stop their tech support from making you jump through 50 hoops in trying to pin the problem on your end. The problem is that the teleco, ISP, and DSL provider are all different companies. The DSL folks aren't told that the teleco has CO's or lines down.

So I guess my point is: are you sure it's on your end?

Start from scratch.... Are you able to get online without the router (I assume you are as you posted this but is it from the dsl connection or dial up?)

I assume your ISP has you use a dynamic IP correct? Where you able to ping anything? by IP # as well as the FQDN ie are you able to ping

65.100.204.164 and www.xtremepccentral.com ? You should get ping results for both...If only by the IP # then you know you have a DNS issue If both then things should be working corrrectly and if neither then time to start troubleshooting more

the first thing i did was call the isp. they said it wasn't on their end.

i am on my laptop(only one that has a modem).

i don't know how to ping anything(so you know i didn't do that lol)

Do the above with the DSL connected DIRECTLY to a single computer to see if you can connect...If not then you know it's more than likely your ISP if you have your config correctly setup

Get a "dos" prompt up and type

Ping "the ip goes here or name" and then hit return and type the info without the quotes :)

To get a "dos/command" prompt in 2k at the run line type "cmd" and hit enter in win9x type "command"

ok i did that and this is what i got:

reply from 65.100.204.164
destination net unreachable
packets:sent=4 recieved=4 lost=0

edit:this was done with the system hooked up the way it was.

i forgot to try this with only one system hooked directly into the modem.

i think i should try this again later today with a good nights sleep and a clearer head.

ok mntsnow. i see i got moved. i'm alright with the move though. lol

i tried the ping addy with the 1 system hooked up directly to the modem.

destination host unreachable
packets-sent=4 recieved=0 lost=4(100% lost)

this means there is a problem on my end?

i'm not going to do anything else until i check back here.

It means that yes the first step is to verify you have the correct setup.... Get on the phone with your ISP and have then walk you thru setting a SINGLE computer and if it still doesnt work at that point it's them

update. i uninstalled all my systems from the router. removed all the settings from the setup box and reinstalled them all (the same way i had them) and it connected this afternoon.

i don't know what the problem was from the beginning. this is the second time this has happened in 2 months. i had it for a whole year and it never went down once.

check out this link if u have time

i don't believe this. i am logged onto my dial up again.

i was surfing the net and i stopped to program my vcr and when i came back my connection was gone again.

i tried everything that i did the other day.

in the setup box it says connected.

when i try to bring up a web site no go.

do i have a different problem this time?

Trying pinging my servers again by IP and by name....If it doesnt work by name but does by IP then you have a DNS issue...

when i ping the ip i get

request timed out.
packets-sent=4 recieved=0 lost=4(100% lost)

when i ping the name

i get host unknown.

i had to edit. i mixed everything up.

well once again i don't know what happened.

when i got up this morning and cut my computer on it connected right away.

i didn't do anything different from any other day.

the only thing is i just have 1 system plugged into the router now.

i am going to keep unplugging all the systems from the router when i am not using them and see if this helps.

should i update the firmware?

mntsnow----can you explain to me what some of the things meant that i was posting.

like what did the things mean in the above post?

was i supposed to be able to connect when i ping the ip or name?

Looks like your ISP is most likely oversold and there might not have been any avaliable IP's to be issued to your computer and thus it was unable to connect to the network...

Time to scream and yell at your ISP
