A friend of mine has just bought a new computer and instead of having shutdown problems which I've had dealings with before he has a problem with the computer closing down properly and a few hours later when he goes into the room it has started up again running windows xp is there a setting in windows that we don't know about or in the bios. also what has happened to the disconnect now when you shut down internet explorer as we used to get the box come up in win 98 but i can't find it in win xp and it can get expensive if some one forgets to disconnect.
thanks for any help

For disconnection:
Open Internet Explorer.
Select Tools -> Internet Options.
Click on the Connections tab.
Ensure the Dial-up connection you use is highlighted, and select settings. Then select advanced.
From there, tick 'disconnect after', and enter your desired idle timeout.
OK all the way back to IE.
Hope this helps.

thanks for your reply i have been to where you said in explorer and there are two settings. (disconnect if idle for more than x minutes and disconnect when connection may no longer be needed) i tried both enable and disable for both and the disconnect box came up once but then stopped again any other suggestions thanks

The setting in IE for 'Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed' is the only setting for poping up the box when you close IE. That will need to be enabled.
As for the auto power on, in the 'power' section of BIOS there is often an option to automatically start the machine at a set time. Other than that, check within windows device manager to see if certain things are set to power on the machine. Lan cards can do this, it might be thinking it's getting a signal and is powering up the machine.
Hope that gives you something to go on...
