I am looking to build a new machine.
I know I have a laptop but I got an urge to make a certain father of a certain girl jelous :)

I was looking at the Fatal1ty Abit boards (or Asus whatever they are) and think an AMD 64 Board of that type would be good. I would have to buy each part every month. It would be about a year before I could start the build.

But first thing is first, what case should I get? I loved the Antec series with the window I had that was blue. Had great cooling and looked good with a light. (see my gallery for what I had)

Next thing would be processor, ram, and mobo. I am thinking AMD 64 (just for laughs) and a Fatal1ty board. Maybe some PC4200 RAM.

Hard drives and video card will come next but I will find those in time. But I welcome your ideas.

Thanks!

BTW.. Its Felicias dad I wanna show that I can be as geeky as him.

by amd64 - we talking a 64 bit chip here? - because having worked with a 64 bit OS version - the incompatability issues stink for most software applications. Anything running an old version of java won't work and that's just for starters. - you'll save a few bucks - but why not go intel?

As for out-geeking a monster geek - that isn't something you win at - it just keeps going and going until someone realizes bleeding edge is a stupid expensive place to be.

You want to impress a geek - buy and fix a broken PDA that you then actually use for something. As I'm in the midst of this myself, I can tell you PDA's are interesting things to fix.....

Something else that's impressive is getting really good equipment for dirt cheap ( happened on a 19" HP new-in-box p920 flatscreen tube style monitor for $45 last week - as Bill Engvall says - now that's awesome ). And - given your budget - getting good stuff at a good price is right up your alley.

so beware of asperations of geek one-up-manship

imo, i makes little sense to buy parts piecemeal over such a long period of time (6+months). it would be more prudent to save your money each month until you have at least enough to buy the mobo, cpu, & ram. even then, if you use that approach, i would time the buy so that your final parts would be purchased no longer than 2 months after that.

they way cutting edge technology is depressing prices, you stand to save a *considerable* chunk of money by being patitent and buying everything at once, even if this means waiting 8-9 months.

cases would be the exception...if you spot one that you look and it is cheap or on sale, buy it immediately. just make sure it accepts whatever size mobo you have planned for later on.
