A SELF-MADE millionaire who has long since left Australia has been flagged as the central figure in the global record industry's mammoth legal fight against file-swapping network Kazaa.

Kevin Bermeister is best known in Australia as the brains behind the ill-fated Sega World development in Sydney's Darling Harbour.
A software executive and property developer, Mr Bermeister left Sydney in 1999 for Los Angeles, where he heads up IT firm Brilliant Digital Entertainment.

But in the Federal Court, the record labels claimed Mr Bermeister also played a crucial role in Sydney-based Sharman Networks, the owner of Kazaa.

The major labels are in the midst of what is widely being touted as the largest copyright infringement case ever brought in Australia. They want Kazaa to filter out pirated files, and are chasing the ultimate owners of the secretive company.
