Hey y'all, a bit earlier tonight/this evening, stayed up late with Stella for company ;)

Not a bad days crunching, 1.2 million points uploaded, plenty of nice dumps and movement again :D

It's the weekend WOOT! WOOT! Hope you all have plenty of rest and relaxation planned. Don't forget the Christmas shopping though, only a couple of weeks to go now

I had quite an interesting day, I had loads planned, but didn't really get much done; Went shopping this morning for a few bit and pieces, and stopped in McDonnalds on the way back. A quarter pounder with cheese and 2 (yes 2!) Big Macs and large fries washed down with an olympic swimming pool size Diet Coke, it's no wonder I fell asleep all afternoon when I got back in

Still, I did get 3 panels of plasterboard dry-linner up in the bathroom, put a new length of floorboard down, fitted a new cat-flap, completed 'Follow Freeman' in HL2, and smoked my way through 12g's of bacco and 1/8 of something else :D

Not much else to tell ya really, it's late (3am), I'm tired, and I have to be up early to take one of the cats to the vets again (limping badly).

Enjoy your weekends, and congrats to the DMS'ers :D

TGITW...................thank God It's The Weekend :)

i'll be out most of tomorrow running errands and such...probably do a bit of shopping as well. but i'm still hoping i can test the p4 mobo i got from newegg last week. and while that's happening, i'm also hoping i can get in some time to watch some of the smallville dvds that i picked up.

so in other words...i'll be doing absolutely NOTHING useful this weekend. ;)

crunch on!

Well Got the HP rig running full boar again, well as full boar as a celly 500 can be!!!:D But I checked it SPU rating, 35, not bad for a 500MHz celly. My K62 500 was only at 17. I got teh T-bird running smoothly for now with 98SE on it instead of 98. Just have to finish updating windows & install a couple more drivers & I can install FaD & run it in the basement tonight. The P3 rig is fully assembled now, I plugged it in to see if it would even turn on. Well for my very first fully assembled PC done all by myself, the damn thing turned on CD lights lit, power lights lit, LED case fan was going fine, just need to hook up a monitor & see if anything is displayed. I didn't get any POST error beeps, so thats a good thing.

I forget how much RAM Ive got dumped in it now, but here's soem basic specs on it:

Abit BE6II
P3 800 in a slotket adapter
64MB PC100
32MB PC100
128MB PC100 (I think?)
GF3Ti500
Sound blaster sound card (128 or 512 not sure?)
2.1GB HD
2.1GB HD
6.4GB laptop HD
floppy
350W PSU
ATX tower case

Well Started up teh P3 with a monitor attached... No display what so ever, how ever no beeps either, but then again I may have attached the speaker connectors wrong too? everything powers up (fans & drives), but no display, I'll try swapping the PC100 dimms around or out, tommorrow & see if that helps. But the T-bird is Hauln a$$ down in the basement, loaded 20 cancer jobs on it & its more than half way done with the first, so in a day or two I'll check on it, hopefully with FaD 1.25g it'll keep crunchin if it runs out.

So I just added another 1.3GHz to the herd.. AGAIN!!! (at least till my bro's friend has the money saved up for the T-bird after he gets back from Texas), so I'll have it to crunch for another week or two.

Time to play a little catch-up!!! :D

Just got a PM earlier from Anandtech, the HP ePC C10 should be arriving Monday, So I'll have to mess with that next week. If I can get it working, thats another 600MHz (Celly) or 850 MHz(P3), which ever I decide to put in, that I can add to the herd also. but the HP Pavillion will be going bye bye as soon as I can get the extra HD put in & find a decent 32MB or more, GF2 or better PCI Vid card.

Ah yes, Water Hazzard - Quite a long section...

Have you got the gun mounted on the hoverboat yet?

I won't tell you what sections you have coming up as it might spoil it, but you have a long ways to go yet, and things get real tough towards the end of the water hazard level :D

How do you mean the graphics are rediculous? I run mine on full settings at 1024x768 and I thought they were great. Ok, not quite up to the visual quality and effects of Doom3, but certainly smoother, and you don't need to use a torch everywhere :)

Steam setup is a pain in the ring piece! You can set it to run offline though, so at least you don't have to connect each time you want to play it, which would be a bind on dial-up...

I'd love to know what communication is going on between the PC and Steam; before I blocked it with the firewall, I noticed in the FW logs that after a 4 hour session, 14 Megs had been sent to Steam  Hardly system spec info

im getting away with 1280x1024... its no where near as dark and invisible war (yet that game is at night time). i still dont have d3 to compare to.

steam might as well call itself a worm. like right away it updated? why? updates are only needed if your having issues? i just dont like automatic programs. itwas pissing me off since i lost an hour of possible playing yesterday evening.

i do have to turn fad off on my main. the game hogs like 400 megs of ram. il get another 512 mushkin level one stick after x-mas.

Sorry Thronka, that "old" HP Pavillion is going to my Bro & his wife to replace their 366 Celly Emachine, whole reason I bought it & upgraded it a bit, has a bit more power, & it was a steal for $60 (whole system, minus OS), will be swapping in the CDRW I gave them awhile back with the 40x CDROM, & will be throwing in a 13.5GB HD to add to the 10GB in there already.

As far as the other PC "the P3" rig I'm gonna keep it & use it as a File server & 2nd Old school game rig (CS, Q3A, UT, etc, etc), just gotta get it to run. Only I will eventually add more & better HD's to it & replace the 52x CDROM I put in it with a CDRW or DVDRW.

I may change my mind on the one above in a few months If I ever get around to upgrading the main rig, would rather have the XP2200+ as a File server/2nd game rig than a 800 P3. But if I do that, the GF3Ti500 is staying, but would throw in the Voodoo 3 3500 in the P3 rig instead.

But I may think about one of my other's, the K6-2 500 rig, not a whole lot in it, but enough to run FaD, though it takes for ever & only has a rating of 17. Best part of that one is the 2x AGP Rage Fury 128 32MB vid card I put in it. let me know if your interested, If you are PM me for specs, I'll try to answer best I can!

Obviously, it is to "serve files". but I mean what kind of files? what is the use of one? I'm not sure I've ever seen one.

I have seen people say that so many times, "maybe i'll turn it into a file server" or I'm gonna build a file server'...

Also, it seems that equipment that is older and/or slower gets relegated to ' file server" status. So, what are these file servers? do I want one? Hell, do I already have one and don't know it?

What attributes does a file server have? As opposed to a regular PC. Any special equipment added?

I am genuinely curious, please enlighten and educate me.

Well alot of people I know that have one usually use them as storage for MP3's & video/Images. that is basically what I'd use mine for, but also as a central point of sorts to back up/archive all my mods/addon files, patchs, demos etc for my games, basically as a Storage unit for all my crap that is cluttering up my main rig, but will allow me to access them over the network at home. Of course bruning them to CD or DVD would be a quick way of doing that, but then you need to sort through all your DVD's/CD's & figure out which has what. I plan on backing up teh important stuff on media, but also have it accessable to me via my network, so I can retireve the stuff quickly. Being it doesn't take much horsepower to run a file server (depends on the data though), thats the reason a lot of people use their older hardware for it, IMO.

As for anything different than a regular PC, not in my case. Just gonna be a regular PC, but with File sharing enabled & the whole system will be able to be accesed via any computer on the network, just gonna have stuff organized much better. But mine is gonna be an older game rig for older PC games too, incase I want to play some of them or need a 2nd rig if I have a friend over or something to play on the LAN.

Yep, I think Shyguy pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I too have a file server, but in my case it's not an old slow coach; XP2600, 2 x 120gig hdd's on a mirror raid, and 1 gig of corsair DDR400 ram. I use mine as a backup device, but it also stores my stats data, runs one of the autostats programs and forwards the data to the web server, and a vast amount of <ahem> adult er, stuff, along with about 150 albums on mp3 :D

But yeah, any machine that serves files over a network could technically be classed as a file server, even if it's just a network workgroup client :)
