Do you have Yahoo messenger, or MSN or Windows messenger running? ICQ? AIM? or any other type of IM client? You might want to check there first.

nope only Xfire Im but still does it even when im not logged in to xfire
go into the sounds applet in control panel - under the "schemes" pull down - select "no sounds" or "none" depending on the OS version and windows will finally shut up already - hehehe.....
basically - there's some systems event you keep hitting that causes the windows chime to go off..... -
Also - go into your event log and see if it is full - you might have a huge event log file that needs clearing and it might actually tell you what's dinging and why.
You had a question about your virtual memory in another thread. When windows reaches your max size for your swap file, it starts using hard drive read-writes in other areas which might be causing your system sound. Perhaps increasing your swap file size will eliminate the sound. If you don't have enough space on drive c: , you might tell windows to use space on another drive letter to create a larger swap file. Games tend to eat up swap file space when they re-draw graphics.

ok it worked thanks
where is the event log?
in 2000 or xp - right click on my computer and select "manage" - and in the manage menu you'll usually find the event viewer - also - you should be able to get to it through the contol panel
