View Full Version : Help!! High Pitch Whine
Argent

Just bought a new mobo (ASRock 775V88) and P4 3.4Ghz and installed everything just fine. It has a high pitch whine that I can't find, however. It's an intense whine that hurts my ears to the point where I've had ringing all day in my left ear! It's unacceptable and unbearable.
I can't find where the whine is coming from. It seems to only manifest when processing is occurring. When I boot up it doesn't start whining until running through the BIOS. When running Windows it doesn't whine unless I'm opening an app. When I run games it whines continuously.
I've unplugged or taken everything out (PCI/AGP cards, IDE drives, RAM, monitor, speakers, EVERYTHING) and booted the bare mobo in the case w/power supply and the whining still occurs. I've isolated the CPU fan and case fans and have disabled them each in turn and that didn't fix the whine. I've tightened screws on the mobo, that didn't help. Where is it coming from?? How can I make it stop?
On a side note, after using this new PC for a couple of days, the BIOS has stopped letting me into setup during POST by hitting F2. That's not as critical but also something that I'd like to fix.
Do I have a bad CPU or motherboard that I shold RMA back??
Please help!! Any ideas?
Thanks much,
Argent74

Whatever is whining must have a moving part (unless it's a speaker whine, but you said you detached "everthing else", so I presume you would have disconnected any case speakers as well, so I'll discount that idea). So that narrows it down to fans and drives, basically. If you disconnect all drives and it still does it, that leaves fans. Disconnect your case fans, then and non-CPU fans (northbridge, etc), and see if it still does it. If it does, it's either the case fan or PSU fan. Try swapping them for others and see if that fixes it.
It's interesting you say it only does it under load, yet it did it with only PSU and CPU fan connected. I would have though that wouldn't have been enough of a load.
Just some thoughts. No idea about the F2 thing - did you change something in the BIOS accidentally??
Cheers

Can you record the whine? High pitches like a whistle or electrical whine?
Could be the hdd.I had one make a high pitched whine not long before it died on me.

It's more like an electrical whine. Very high pitched. It's also intermittant and only manifests when there is processing.
It can't be the hard disks, I had those unplugged and it still whined. I also doubt it's a fan, I checked each fan by holding the blades still and the whining occurred even while each fan was not moving.
I'm stumped! What can an "electrical" whine mean?

Do you have another Power Supply Unit (PSU) you can try?

I dont know if this is useful but dont some mobos come with a on board speaker like my D865Perl Borad has a little round thing and on it it says mobo speaker and when im in games and i press way too many buttons a once it will goes off and i let go of the buttons and it will turn off. so it might be you motherboard speaker beacuse nothing else is doning it.

I agree with the Snow Man here. Try another (bigger/better) PSU. I've seen these things whine when they are not producing enough power for the system requirements.
I've also seen MoBos die from poor PSUs so don't let this go on if it's the case.

HEY FOLKS! THAT'S THE SAME THING AS WHAT MY GATEWAY DID!
(its CPU died after a while, but i still have the board)
It's when they make the CPU, or another chip, if they don't secure the silicon crystal properly, and at high load it is gonna start vibrating because its being tossed side to side million times per second, and it's gonna make a high-pitched noise, that you can't find the source of. Does it get worse when you use the "hand" tool in Photoshop after zooming in at 500%? If it does, then you should try another CPU, and see if it goes away

doesn't sound like one, but it case it bothers you, you can take the cover off of it and you'll see a shiny metal disk unside. Take the disk out, and the speaker will stop its nasty business.

I just found this thread by google and I seem to be having the same problem. After lots of testing with different parts, cpu fans, the noise either seems to be coming from my mainboard or the cpu die(which is chipped but seems to work fine  ) but it also comes through on the speakers a little bit. It starts making this really high pitched electrical sort of whine after windows boots up but it goes away when loading something or clicking on a pdf file. Im getting a new athlon xp later anyways so I'll find out then if the sounds really coming from the cpu.
Im using:
athlon 1200 w/thermaltake silent boost
asus a7n8x-x MB
enermax eg365p-ve psu
radeon 9700 pro
2x kingston KVR333/256R

Is it possible your monitor is making that noise? I've had some that would make a noise with lots of white..

Hello and welcome to the forums rockawookie and Argent.
Well ,I've had several do what roswell says.2 1800's and a 2100. And I've had some with the onboard speaker do this, but I would look at the power supplyas the culprit first, then I would look at the chip or board next.
