what can you do with the Palm Pilot ? I know nothing about them. could it take the place of my note book in the tractors and truck? and can you download/transfer the data form it to a regular pc?

Yes that's it's primary duty is to replace a notebook and pen. It keep has a calendaring system and more. check out this link

Yeah graff style is what is normally used but you can enable the "keyboard" and use the stylis to "click" on the letters you want. but once you have used it for a couple of days you can get quite fast with graff writing :)
