Hi,
I wonder if any one has come across the following problem:
I can be running Xp Pro for a while and suddenly, I cannot open any more windows or programs. The only way I can resolve this is to either re-boot OR end Explorer from the Windows task list and restart it. Once it happens and have taken the steps above to get working again, it happens agan very quickly.
When it happens - ONE of MORE of the following:
1) Can not open any more folders at all
2) I get a DOS prompt
3) A window opens with no contents, even though I know there are items in it - and I can see the count of items in the status bar at the bottom
4) A window opens with the MS flag icon in place of the menu bar and usually the folder name is also missing.
5) Cannot start any programs.
I initially thought it may be a problem with memory - but I have 512Mb with ample space on the hard-drive for paging.
My Config is:
Pentium 1.6M with 516Mb of Ram, 80Gb disk. I have more hard drives etc attached to the laptop via a USB 2.0 hub. I am running Win XP Pro with SP1. I have noticed when I access the external drives the problem occurs quicker.
I have run all the tests on the components and they go through fine!
Are any of the following reasons for the problem:
1) When I got the laptop (brand new IBM laptop) - XP Pro was pre-loaded and was told that WIn XP was pre-registered - I rang Microsoft and this was confirmed - could it be that I need to re-register it due to the external disk (grasping at straws here!!)
2) I read somewhere there were problems with attaching some devices (I have a 4 port USB hub) via a USB hub!
3) A program not managing memory and not releasing it properly
I hope there is enough information here - but if anyone needs any more please let me and I'll supply it. I would be grateful for any help.
Thanks!:(
