i don't have any idea what caused my system to blow. i cut it off last night and when i cut it on today i saw a flash of light and smelt smoke and then nothing.
system spec:
epox 8kha+
1800+xp
512pc2100
ati aiw 7500
sound blaster live
ibm 40gb
wd 80gb (special edition)
32x cdrw
16x dvd
win2k sp2
were any of these parts non compatible?
what could of caused this to happen?
how to tell what needs to be replaced?
did i fry everything?
i hope i didn't leave out anything. kind of hard typing through all the tears.
Wow... Sorry to hear that. What a thing to happen! :(
Well, it's going to be difficult to determine exactly what hardware got fried. Is any power coming on when you fire up the system? My suggestion would be to first check the power supply and try another power supply unit on the system and work your way up from there...
Here's a method you can use to test you power supply unit...

i tried another power supply that i had and it posted. now i have to get another one.
last night we had a storm and my son was using my computer to download some music while i wasn't home.
any recommendations for a power supply?
i just added another hdd and a controller card to my system over the weekend.
i have the chieftec 108b case. it came with a 300w power supply.
i guess it wasn't enough after adding those two things.

Hmmm...I have two similar systems with the 431 watt Enermax, & I've been very happy with them. They also have two big fans inside, but a bit pricey. I paid $100 each.

I don't know, I have everything you do (minus the DVD but add a Zip 100) on a Powerman 300w PS. No problems here. Maybe the storm got it.

Woah! That's not a PS that's a Thing of Beauty! Oh yeah! I never regretted paying the $100 for those bad boys. Mine runs my home PC...XP 1600+ DDR w/ GF3Ti500 & 8 drives (4 IDE, 4 SCSI) dual SCSI controllers, plus all 9 fans. Yep, 9 fans, guys.
I haven't had to vacuum my desk off since Christmas ;)
The one at my office is less stressed, but mission critical stuff, you know!

Must be like driving a Convertible. Do ya have to wear a hat when you're at the keyboard? ;)

Earplugs, or crank up the Yamahas. ;)
Naw...it's not really that bad. I have some strategic sound deadening.
Having the cat sucked up flat against the front intake helps too

Before you start getting happy just by looking at the WATT on the box and a bargain price, there's more to it then that... Might want to read here (http://www.overclockers.co.nz/ocnz/misc/st300blvpsu/2.shtml).

Um lets not get sidetracked with other conversations and get back to the problem at hand,
Robin has a problem lets see what we can deduce and see if there is any life left.
If you are getting a post with a different powersupply then I guess that would be the starting place to get that replaced.
Personally I like the antect psu's. I have never had a nary a problem with them.
last night we had a storm and my son was using my computer to download some music while i wasn't home
Robin I have a couple of questions.
1. do you ahve frequent storms in your area?
2. Do you have some sore of battery backup/power surge protector?
Battery backups/surgeprotectors can save your computer in the event of something distourous happens and the lines get zapped. I am not sure what type of connection you have.
If you had smelt smoke naturally I would be concerned so hopefully it was only within the psu and didn't touch nothing else.
Let us know what kind of post you are getting once you get new psu installed. :)
Don't dispare just yet okay. :) Im fishing just as much as you are right now. ;)

Antec is usually pretty good stuff. We have six PC's at the office with Antec 350w PSUs and no problems.
I've heard of Enhance, but never used one. Dunno...

NDC, could you please point out what is wrong with the PSU I linked to? For $20 it's not bad considering the price. I will likely order this for myself because of problems I now have since adding a GF2 card. I would prefer an antec, have one now, but I can't afford one.
