Dualies up, had some vid card issues under Win2k while testing, but otherwise running great, 2x Uknown K7 @ 1.8Ghz (It won't ID the processors)

Tried getting them up to 2Ghz, but without the voltage mod I can't, but temps are at 46 a piece using stock AMD coolers :D (full load temp)

i'm not sure that turning FAD off while you use the comp is a good idea, Shyguy.

even if you were running something very cpu intensive, your rating wouldn't drop significantly enough which would appreciably change your total points. even if your cpu rating gets halved, if an average WU takes 30 hrs, a 2-4hr interval (at a lower rating) isn't going to mean much in the big picture of things.

moreover, by suspending FAD while you use the PC, your output (per hr) actually becomes less.

Yeah, Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW-P just came in today, so I picked it up, threw two XP2200's in her and now she replaced an Athlon 1Ghz (fair trade I think)

Making my slowest machine here a XP1600..

This one will replace my Webserver/MySQL server.. (once I finish setting up Suse.)

Yeah But its already at like 245 hours, so at say a CPU rating of 165 thats over 40K, if like what happened last night, drops down to 98 CPU rating after playing some games, thats a little over 24K, so I'd rather lose the few extra hours of work by turning it off for a bit than lose almost 20K in points & since its only got like .17% left I don't want to risk it. Its taken it almost half a day to do .20% since earlier this morning, but with my luck, I'd be playing Joint Ops & it'd drop that low while its finishing & I'd lose all those points... Its happened before, earlier this spring I lost almost 10K in points because of something like that.

i don't think your interpretation of how the total pts are calculated is correct.

while it is true that pts equals cpu rating X time

the cpu rating is not calculated when the WU finishes but rather it is averaged over the duration of the job.

for ex. if a WU takes 100 hrs to complete and let's say the first 80hrs the cpu rating is 100 and the remaining 20 hrs the cpu rating is 50 then the total points awarded is as follows:

100 x 80hrs == 8000
50 x 20hrs == 1000

for a total of 9000 pts.

so as you can see even though 20% of the job time was done at 1/2 of the max rating (50 instead of 100), you only lost 1000 pts from the theoretical max of 10000. if we extend the scenario to apply to your situation, ie. we suspend FAD for the last 20 hrs and then resume it again when the cpu is not heavily used, all you've simply done is is discard 20 hrs of potential 'work' time.

granted, WU time is not linear when the cpu rating changes so drastically (from 100 to 50) but i think you get the idea.

in fact, if we change the numbers a bit more realistically,

100 x 80hrs == 8000
50 x 40hrs == 2000 (time taken to finish would be closer to twice as long since cpu spare clock cycles is halved)

your total point production remains unchanged.

even if you 'improve' your rating score for such a short duration, it simply means that you now are running FAD less per X hrs a day which ultimately affects your overall production. it may not be a lot but every little bit matters and that little amount could be much more if you make it a habit of suspending FAD while you use the PC.

it's up to you...but i would just leave FAD on. it will only improve your overall production.

Hey, Cap'n - did you have to modify those XP2200's to run in the dual mobo? I thought only MP's would run as duals. :confused:
