Can any one help, i have installed Windows ME on my hard drive it works ok but the colour is all crappy.

I went to change the colour in settings, but there is only 16 colours, no other option at all and the slider bar is ghosted.

Is there any thing i can do to correct this.

Thanks ion advance, Fagin.

Choose a Different Display adapter Driver (for monitor) to run in the Display properties box, I think Windows ME & 9x defaults to 16 color after a fresh install, what Vid card or graphics chip are you running? Should be using teh right driver for it & should allow you to increase the color settings (if its been installed?), otehrwise Windows goes 16 color by default i believe? Could also be that you have the wrong type of Monitor selected to run, but most likely you don't have the right Display Adapter installed.

Shyguy - According to Belarc Adviser my display info is as follows

Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) [Display adapter]
Maxdata 12.9 [Monitor] (12.9"vis, February 1998)

Is that the info you meant, there is no mention of a graphics card. Thanks, Fagin.

you need to install the correct driver for your video card. I would go to device manager and remove the video card and reboot and hopefully it should detect it.

That will probably result in the standard adapter again.
Pull the case cover and eyeball the vid card. Card brand/model maybe printed on it. You may get the info you need off the chipset. If it is onboard vid, look on the mainboard for the brand/model of the board. Check any disks that came with your computer. Should be one for the vid card or it will be on the mainboard drivers disk...;)

Just out of interest i went into Device manager but i could not see a video card mentioned, but i did see - Standard PCI graphic adapter (VGA) inside the Display Adapters foldeer.would that be the item. i checked properties for that and it shows that it is working correctly

you need to change that driver. it only does the standard colours (16). Check it to Super VGA and see what happens.

Hi Fagin how's your good lady?

As MrComputer said, the best way is to take a butchers at the hardware, the graphics card usually has a name or a number on it!

Before you do that, do check through all the disks that came with the machine originally, one of them should have a video driver on it!

As you look at the front of the machine, ( assuming it's a tower, ) the left hand panel is the one to unscrew! The graphics card is the one the monitor connects to!

Get a name or model number, and you are in business!

Hope that helps,

:)

I got it done, i took the case apart and saw the video card ATI Rage 128 pro. and then i remembered seeing ATI in very small print on one of the CD'S that came with the puter. In big print it said INSTALTION CD & ATI DVD PLAYER so i thought it was purely for the DVD player, which is why i overlooked it.

So it was taking the side off and looking inside that sorted it out,

so thanks again to all of you guys. Fagin
