Ok, my friend is an online game player at ( Ionthunder.com ) Last night she was told of some updates for winxp home. She installed them but now can't get into any of her game room. It keeps coming up (page error). Is there a security setting she needs to change or what.?, or will she have to uninstall the updates.?. Please someone help, she's drivin me nuts...lol
Thanks,
Maxx

Probably the winXP SP2 and the firewall it loads by default. Just open the LAN connection, click properties and then Advanced and see where you can allow various apps through the firewall.

I presume the good folks at the game site would be able to tell her what app to let through on what port.

Cheers
Mick

She's on dial up, how & where would she find & change these setting in order to change & allow them.?

Firewall is installed on the dial up connection, then. Go to network setting in the start menu, and right click dial up connection.

thanks but she couldn't figure it out, so she's gonna try sys restore & go back before she updated her pc....silly woman. I found it on mine but hers wouldn't allow her to dissable or change anything, or so she says.
But thanks just the same, it's nice knowing there are sites that are alive & ready to help out,

Have a good one,
Maxx

Tell her not to do a system restore. Go to control panel, then add and remove. Microsoft says doing the system restore is not a good idea with SP2. I had to remove it on one of mine last weekend and it seems to be fine now.

You can disable the firewall only. That's preferred, as SP2 has other security enhancements that ARE useful. :p

Let me see if I can find a howto linky...

Ok, the Cable Guy at MS (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg0204.mspx) has this neat page which should help. ;)

Go to start.
All programs.
Accessories.
System Tools.
Security Center.
Turn firewall off.

I don't recommend anyone running necked without a firewall of any kind.
If your behind a router or have a second party firewall I would highly recommend having one or the other.
