View Full Version : Moving house! Wireless & Wired networking

Its that time of year when I move house again! I'm gonna be living with a friend for a while on the other side of the city - means I don't have to sign a contract so I'm free to move away when I find a job worth moving for!

Anyway, I don't think she'll let me run wires all over the flat somehow, and the internet access point will be on the other side of the flat, so I'm not sure what to do. I also want to keep costs to a minimum, although I do have some stuff to ebay to cover some of my costs (Efficient Networks 5891 ADSL modem/router/hub/firewall, working P2 400 PC, an AMD K6-2 500 with mobo and some RAM and a 15' monitor). My plan is to have wireless 801.11g router with built in 4 port hub by the connection point and have my music/FaD server patched into it (it'll have to be quiet and hidden in a cupboard tho!). I'm not sure if I'm gonna have broadband or dial-up yet - don't really want to pay a £60 connection fee if I'm only gonna be there a few months.

I can then have my main PC in my room, with a wireless NIC. Kel (who I'm moving in with) has a P4 1800 that has FaD on, but no internet connection, so I might get a wireless NIC for that as well (would only need to be 11b to keep costs down).

My problem is I'm gonna want to connect more than one PC up in my room. I was thinking I could plug my hub into the onboard NIC and use Internet Connection Sharing... can anyone think of a better way?

If you have dial up, you would need to have the machine with the modem attached to the Internet Access point, to make the connection to the net! You could then possibly have a Wireless Access point set up from that machine to push the internet round to the others!

Broadband would be easier, since once the connection is established it can go straight into a wireless router and be pushed out to the other machines wherever!

The price difference between an 802.11g and b NIC is not vast.

Other things to think about,

How far do you want the signal to go?

How fast do you need it to be? I am still running on 802.11b, and it does all I need it to!

I use a PC with a wireless NIC to connect my hub via internet connection sharing. I have 6 machines connected to the hub.
It works fine as long as the machine with the shared connection is using XP/Win2k. Don't even waste your time with 98/ME.

Yeah! didn't think of that! I'm running it that way at the moment - got my P2 400 with a modem by the phone socket and then a cat5 running through the house to the router down here. I'm gonna give that PC to my flatmate cos I won't be living with him anymore and he needs it for his iPod! I've got an NF7 and 512Mb DDR on its way though, so I can move things around so I've got a Duron 1000 that can run the modem if need be - would be quite a good excuse to leave it running!

I don't really need 11g - b would be fine, but I'm running through a 10mb hub here and it occasionally annoys me if I'm shifting big files - I'll be doing that less when I'm not living with these two though anyway... ebuyer have an 11g hub for around £40, but I'd like to get one with a firewall and ADSL modem built in I think.

I def won't be using win9x - I struggle when I go back to that now! XP all the way!

Or you can get the very same one, on it's own from ebuyer for 65 notes :) The pcmcia card on its own is 20 notes.

I have almost got the go ahead to buy one myself...

will have a looksy - I've got an order for £1300 with them atm- mostly not for me though...

Found it: quickfind 64222 - do you think that is a better deal than Linksys Wireless-G (45023)?

Might have to flex my plastic friend again!

I'd go for D-Link over Linksys any day, but maybe that's just me!
