ok, what you useing on yours.
I started with zoan alarm "free version" since I liked it as much as I do !! I upgraded to the Pro version.
I have never tried any of the others ect. so, I can't base my outlook on them. so, let's here about them and maybe there is a better one than za pro ??

I'm basically a Hardware firewall person. Although I do have Norton's "Internet Security Family Edition" on the kids boxes cause I love having the filtering that I can do...I can block them from all kinds of sites and they cant do anything about it until they figure out how to hack my admin account...Which I dont think they will be able to do for atleast a few more years :)
Hi Gene
I'm using a hardware router - Linksys BEFSR41 (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=20&grid=5) along with ZA Pro. It's been a great combination for me; my comps are on a private net via the Linksys NAT and hooks my three comps to the 'net using only one IP.
I only use the firewall that come with the Linksys BEFSR41 rounter. I used to use BlackIce but...

I use Sygate Personal Firewall. The only thing is that it has a nag screen until it is registered. However, registration is free.

problem is. I'm still on a dial up. so a hardware set-up is out of the question or cost to much. I did one time see one f/dialu-. but, lost the ulr.
and I feel my system is secrre. I have tested it on almost ever test site on the web. heck, I even had my isp try to get into it. Stoped them flat.
I might add. have also saw where you can use a linux box as a firewall. but, than again I would have to use my brain to learn the o/s or how to do it!!

Gene the SMC Barracade 7004BR is the one that will directly hookup to a external Modem AND has a Printserver built into it. I fyou watch the ads/rebates you can get one for around the 35-40 buck mark!

I am using a dedicated PC for my router/firewall. It is running Sygate Firewall, BlackICe and Sygate Home Networking.

I use the free version of ZA. But the router I use has a built-in firewall, so ZA is just added insurance.

I dont use one in Windows. In Linux I use SuSE Personal Firewall. Its a basic packet filter. Also,in Mandrake 8 I use the firewall you enable during modem configuration.
For those Linux firewalls that bring old 486 boxes back to usefulness, check this out (http://www.achtung.com/smallwall.html).

I use ZA personal all the time on both of my boxes. I make it ask me for permission to connect any prog to the net...especially outlook express:)
I also have BlackIce and Jammer as backups and enable them for those times when I feel the need for a little extra protection :D
If you have dynamic IP's this is enough..if you have a static IP's then its probably best to have a hrdwr wall.

The latest reviews that I have read say that Sygate is better than ZoneAlarm so that is what I am using. Even if you are using something else, you can test your system at the following site to verify how well you are protected.

Great site, Sys-Eng
I tested my computer on the Quick Scan, Stealth Scan, and the Trojan Scan, as that was all the time I had available to do. My results stated that all of my probes are secure and blocked all attempts to get through.
I'm using Norton Internet Security (latest ver.) and Zone Alarm (latest ver.). Appears that Norton has picked up more attacks than ZA, but I'll have to investigate this further to find out for sure.
Norton Internet Utilities performs very well...I suggest you d/l the free trial, test it out, and get the full version! It's worth it. Get it HERE (https://www.symantecstore.com/dr/v2/ec_MAIN.Entry10?V1=30006053&SP=10024&PN=28&xid=27674&DSP=&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=0)

Tried several, but settled on ZA Pro for the odd occasion that I actually boot to Windoze & connect to the web with it. ;)
