~Hello All! Blau Here! A few ?'s for any that might know or have time to answer:
1) Can SP2 be installed on an OEM install of XP(Sony Vaio Recovery Discs w/XP preSP-1) that does not have SP-1 or SP-1a already on it?
2) Can a Slipstream installation Cd be created that will also load SP-1 and/or SP-2 using OEM XP install discs?
3) Does anyone know where to obtain a copy of the original SP1, not SP1a, so I can slipstream a disc w/SP-1 & 2 on it?

~ I'm a 48 yr-old Geek wanna-be that recently got back into computers after not having anything to do with them since they were all tape-drive and and a 'laptop' was the size of a suitcase! A friend gave me their nice but, really dirty, Sony VaioPCV-RX581 with a bad hard drive after they bought a newer model!
I currently have this `puter setup with XPSP1( duh, somehow I lost my orig dnloaded copy of sp1 ) and have it nicely tweaked(unnecessary services turned off, messenger removed etc...)! I just like to plan ahead for the worst case scenario and loadin all that stuff sure takes a lot of time! I downloaded SP1a just in case! Also, I downloaded SP2-RC1 and RC-2 as soon as each came out and tried them with no probs although I have since uninstalled them both! I have now downloaded a copy of the final release of SP2 but, have yet to install! I plan to buy an extra HD and if I can't slipstrm with the OE I'll just mirror the current drive! OK Nuf Said!
~Thanks For Any And All Replies!! :~) Blau

You should be able to get the SP2 through Auto updates.

Back to the question: can you slipstream SP1 and 2? Yep, sure can. AFAIK you ONLY need SP2, though, as it already contains what is in SP1. Don't have to do both. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone. ;)

But you will need a full install version of the winXP CD, not a "recovery" one, AFAIK. Not sure what came with your Sony, but many "recovery" CD's are NOT a full -blown install CD, and slipstreaming may not work correctly with them. :o

Another option is just to d/load the full install files of service pack 2, and load it onto a CD-R. That way, when you reinstall with your "recovery" CD, you can just chuck ther service pack CD in and run that to upgrade the install.

Hope that helps, and welcome to XPC!! There are few of us "older" geezers here. Not all of XPC's members are young geeks.

Slipstream is a process of incorporating service packs into windows CD's. I think it's main use was for enterprises rolling out service pack reinstalls across a large network, but it's become quite useful for those who want to update their OEM CD's to be able to load service packs on their reinstalls.

I can find more technical and howto links if ya want, em, Unca Bob! :D

No. I've heard the term but didn't know what it was.

Haven't done slipstreaming in a while myself. Maybe I should take it up again... :)

Generally, M$ service packs are cumulative, meaning that they contain the updates of the previous SP :) Quite convenient IMO. Anyways, welcome to our forums Blau! :) Great to see you here!
