Sorry to keep bringing this up, but I really can't seem to grasp this. I work with networking all day long but this internet gateway is really messing me up. I have never messed with a router before so, I am a little nervous.
My Domain Controller will supply ip's thru DHCP and will be running AD.
My file server will house all of the users info such as user folders.
My main system will be my toy.
My printer server will have a printer hooked to it :)
I will have a couple more additions within the next few weeks also.
My hub is a Cisco 1516m and can even have it's own IP address.
your thoughts? and a BIG thanks!

- when I was setting up my net - it was a frustrating time - nothing worked - and finally it did - the ip addy's and correct poionting were the problem! -no router though!- wiz

Ed, can you get the URL to the manual for the "Hp/cisco hub" for me? I have a couple of ideas but need to check a couple of spec's on that unit as I'm not familar with it and I just dont have the time to go searching for it myself :(

HERE (http://www.alliancedatacom.com/cisco-1516m.htm) is an overview of the hub. Makes it sound nicer than it really is.
HERE (http://cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/10bthubs/hp10base/) is the manual and stuff.
THANKS Mntsnow...

Mntsnow: I have the DSL modem plugged in the UPLINK port of the hub and it seems to be working good, but that doesn't seem like it's very safe. Any ideas?
I just want to mimic a business environment as much as possible since I am currently studing for my MCSA.
Do you need to know that I connect to the internet thru PPPoE with earthlink?
THANKS!
THIS (http://www.2wire.com/home/hp_index.html) is the router (model 100) that I bought today. It had some really good reviews on it plus it seemed a little more secure. I just want to be safe but I am still not sure if I even need a router.
*UPDATE* took the DSL line out of the uplink port and plugged it into the router, then plugged the router into a regular port on the hub and that works fine. However, if I want to not use the router, I have to use the uplink port on the hub for the modem to be used. Does that make sense?

Just thought I'd mention that my DSL has sped up since installing the router. Any ideas why???

Hi edwelly - let me read a little - I got a friend with a router who wasted 5 hours of my time by not tellin me that he picked up his router second hand and would not ask the person who gave it to him how to set it up. I think I'll go back and gander over it - and get back to you! - wiz

Well Ed with you mentioning that your now on DSL and have a 2wire router/firewall I would only use the HP 16port hub just as a standard hub or if you want to get fancy enable the monitoring tools and do some QOS type stuff with it. but as for security that hub really isnt going to do much for you. The 2wire router is whats going to give you security since it has the built in firewall.
As for ip naming scheme I just listed standard 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254 addresses which will be using 255.255.255.0 for the subnetting and just keep increasing the last number in the address for each additinal computer you plug in.
DNS IP's will be those that are issued by your ISP or if you want to use others just let me know and I can give you what my registered DNS servers are to use.

Mntsnow: THANKS my good friend! I hope you know how much zi really appreciate it!
My setup is VERY close to that EXCEPT that the router is asinging the DHCP addresses for now. I don't have the W2k server in place yet since it is working at the moment and I am still loving the whole DSL thing. I figure when I put the PDC in place, then I will static the ip's withing the DHCP range that my router is on.

Excellent :) Yes once you go to a "true" network with a PDC and such it's much wiser to use static IP's as then you will be able to route specific types of packets to the correct server/system without worrying if that system's ip has changed durring a reboot and the packets are going to the wrong system :)
