Due to one of my boxes going down. the fan on the cpu is dead and a hard drive crapping out. I have ordered the WD 120gig unit.
Now due to me wanting the best in my 2000+, I will be installing my 40 gig in the box that is down and the 120 gig will go in mine.
Oh, this is the special edition 120 gig with 8 meg. cashe. :jaw:

A nother case of 1 box goes down and is used as an excuse for an upgrade for my main box.....

I will benchmark the 40 gig and compare it with the 120 gig. If I can I will post the results.

Any comment or suggestions?

the WD JB is a nice drive, but it is a bit overhyped. If the IBM's were still an option, the GXP120 offers similar performance at lower price.

However the lower seek times of the Maxtor D740X plus the great support and low price (although only 80GB) makes it a best buy imo :)

I agree with you otheos. But I've had good luck with these drives.
If I don't like with one then i can always put it in my file server.

MDS,
No Problem!!!!
I think in actual benchmarks that I will not see a difference. but in programs where cashing matters that I will. this one should outlast my whole computer..It should be in today. maybe....

You plan to run 5 OS on one box :) Man I'd hate to set that bootloader up :)

well maybe not 5 but then again????
This is just in case, since i will have the room..

1: xp pro {main system}
2: mandrake
3: win 98
4: Me {for testing }
5: maybe another linux after learning Mandrake?

bootloader shouldn't be any problem. I use system commander.

I have installed the 120 and HD Tach shows about 41 meg continious transfer while the 40 topped out at 32 meg.
3dmark2001 also showed and increase from 7500 to 8100 pts.

I will try to post results for HD Tach when I can...

EDIT: I just relized that earthlink gave me 10 meg to play with on the web...

The results are

3DMark is a graphical benchmark. How can a new HDD influence your points?

beats me. but the only thing that was different was the hard drive. All the background apps were running on both tests..

Hey!

I have a 40GB Western Digital that I want to put in my NEC.
I've tried to install it in this before, but for some reason after about 3 hours, the Western Digital quit (still works in other pc though)
For some odd reason, It didn't like the environment in the NEC. I don't know wether it was the bios or this motherboard can't handle that kind of HD power or what happened.
I lost the Data Lifegaurd disk that came with the Western Digital and I'm sure that would help in the installation of the HD into the BIOS.

I have the same WD 120 gig in my comp. It's a very good choice for a drive.
