View Full Version : Dial up net?

In the back woods up here - we have dialup netty - and depending on what is going on with prevailing winds and the like -
we get anywhere from 23.89kbits/s to 40.89kbits/s.
These are two different locations but the same dailin number.

Location 1 - gives a 26.4 to 28.8 connection - but always gives a 23.* speed -
Location 2 - gives 46 to 48 k connection and has speeds not usually below 38.*

This is determined by using the test on the front page of here.

I have traded mail with the copper line guys and they blame my equipment - which is kinda entertaining given that they did not know that THEY tore down thier microwave tower
three years - just so we could use [ updated ] copper wire - 'read this as same stuff - 50 years old'

Anyway - Since I have tracert'ed the sucker a couple times to known ip addys - and keep getting entertaining numbers, the question comes down to this:

Is there anyway way to pin point the problem switch from my end or am I stuck with kibbitzing and a copper line answer of "engineering cannot fix the switch until it fails"

"But we can spend 65 milllion locally to make your cell phone less fuzzy.?"

{wiz reads this over - figures its a rant type thing - but if someone has an idea ?!}

Hmmm...when the wind blows???

I had that problem sorta. Low connection speeds, too; for which
the teleco would only answer "Sorry. We can't guarantee any particular connection speeds"

But when it was windy, we'd get "dropped" repeatedly.

Turned out that when we bought a new line for the modem, the installer hung a complete new drop from the pole.

But he never tightened the upper end terminal nuts! Afer that was fixed (requiring 3 service calls, BTW) the "dropping" stopped & my connectiom immediately went from 28000 to 49333 bps!

Same sorta thing happened at work to. After some complaints, and the same ol' runaround, they sent out someone who "tightened something" and my connection went from 24600 to 50400!

My theory? There's a lot of loose "nuts" at the telecos! :busted:

yeh your right about this - the location 2 is 50 yards from the telco shack which is the hub for the village. Location 1 is about 10 miles on the other side of it. and everyone on that side has the same complaint! - we have only one direction in and out. Power and phone! - no loop - so ?

I figure if I could come up with a reasonable proposal for the community - I would put it forward! 5000 should be enough but the wire guys are very god like - if only in attitude

I should add that I have completed a 12 hour download of a bunch of files from Shadowhoaxer - I really wanted the maps for UT - the only game I ever played since asteroids in the late 70's.

But the notable thing is this - I get 2 to 25 second delays in traffic transfer when working online - this is prevalent all the time - opsys is w98 -

and I am in the process of experimenting with xp pro and w2k -

ps I have used w2k for about a year - but just loaded xp a couple nights ago - and it remains in the test hardrive - until I get some time to look it over better.

Thiinking out loud - I wonder if the network transfer code is better in the 2k and xp rather than using the w98 anymore?

well as a little update - I in the past did the manual registry hack of the mtu et all stuff and sometimes got a significant improvement - I went looking and found easymtu -= and I went from a 4 and 5 digit ping to a 3 digit ping most of the time - The only problem I have now is old modems on the telco side that are bad- I sometimes have to dial in 2 or 3 times to hit a good one - but once I get it - no problem!!

any way - the local paper did a inperson thing with the VP of customer service last week and guess who I am going to direct a public letter to the editor - espeecially given that the local towns are opposing the new cell tower installations - should be fun -
