View Full Version : BEFSR41 setup pages freeze?

I've finally gotten highspeed cable internet service in my area, and I'm having trouble with one computer locking up my Linksys router.

The network consists of 2 WinXP Pro boxes, 3 Win98SE PC's, a Netgear hub, a Linksys BEFSR41 router, and the cable modem.

The trouble is that when I try to access the router (192.168.1.1) with the P3-500 Win98 box, the router configuration screen freezes after I type in the router password. As the attached image shows, the page eventually times out after failing to load the "tmp.gif" image? I don't have this trouble with any of the other PCs on the network, and it happens whether I configure this computer for a static IP, let it use the automatic settings, or run the WinXP network setup wizard.

Occasionally, it will manage to load the initial setup page, but trying to change to a different router configuration page will again freeze the page, which also results in my internet connection freezing for that PC (the LAN continues to function normally however)

Any ideas on what could be causing this one machine to freeze up the router?

The first thing that comes to mind Fingers ...

Using one of the systems that doesN'T lockup the router double check to see how many systems you allow in your DHCP addressing scheme or make sure you disable it if your going to statically set all of your machines. Then make sure you do a "ipconfig /release" and then a "ipconfig /renew" after you have correctly configured the box that is locking up the router prior to trying to access the router from that box.

? if you dont try and access the router from the p3-500 box does everything else still work? (ie net access, lan access ect?)

Doh.. I thought I was subscribed to this thread?

I have checked the DHCP table and everything looks OK. I've tried to leave is assigned automatically, and I also did it manually and it reacts with the router the same way.

Yes, the P3-500 accesses the network and the internet just fine, but typing 192.168.1.1 into the address bar from that PC, grinds my router and internet service to a halt.

What happens if you change the port that the P3-500 is plugged into? does it still lockup? does the other computer now using the p3-500's port work correctly?

Actually that may be a good question. I've had that computer plugged and unplugged from the router many times and I expect that I've been using different ports, but it's possible that I've been plugging it back into the same spot everytime? I'll give that a try tomorrow :)

Does anyone know of a solution to this? My network has been doing the same for a few days.
A node directly connected to the router would have net access but those connected to the two hubs would actually freeze the router upon connection. I tried another router but the same thing happens.

Any chance this is a virus on some of the PS behind the hubs (maybe a DOS on certain ports)? Will try flushing DNS/IPs again, scan each machine and report back.

18 PCs (3 Macs)
2 hubs
netopia router (also have d-link)
DHCP assigned
3 printers
Win2k server

I just got the 8 port one and everything is cool with me. but, this might not have anything to do with it. but what version of IE are you useing and have you installed the SP's for IE.

I had a lot of IE problems with a 98se system and the ?? a install if the SP on ie 6.0 fixed it.

also have you called your linksys rep?

I have SP3 on the Win2k machines (IE6). Will apply SP4 and other patches (hard to keep up w/ M$ and bug fixes). The Linksys was the spare router; Its not being used. I'll call the Netopia guys on Fri. The interim solution was to bypass the hubs but only 8 ports on the router (wonder if RJ-45 'splitters' would work :D ).

I might be missing this whole thing. I was going to buy 2 routers. I was told not to. just come out of the linksys with a cable to my 8 port w/uplink hub to my system ect.

I could do this until I ran out of connections or I killed my cable access. my plans are to run 16 system
