Robin, I run Apache on Win2k behind a router... some things to consider
Make sure Windows SP's are up to date with all security fixes..
Uninstall Apache, delete the folder then re-install
After installing you might need a different port since some residential ISP's have port 80 blocked
If you have a router then you have to give the host computer a static IP address (it can never change) and forward the appropriate port to it through the router config (not DMZ, just the port)
Also if you have a firewall on that PC make sure only the port you're using is open..
All I can think of for now, asides from making sure if you have a router it's webaccess is disabled otherwise it will snag incoming port 80's before forwarding it

i don't have a static ip. i am using directupdate to keep my ip current.(but my ip changed and now my other boxes can't connect)
i have all the SP installed already(i did that before i installed apache)
i have a d-link 604 router with 3 other boxes connected.
i forwarded port 80 on the router and put in a ip range in zone alarm.
robin
from server i can connect to localhost but not from the above link.

timeout :(
Go to www.grc.com and run the shields up scan to see if your port 80 is open, It could be your ISP has blocked http requests from your PC so you might have to move it to a different port.

port 80 is stealth.
so when i open up another port will my web page be automatically directed to the new port?

You will have to tell your Apache configuration to answer on whatever port you open up
robin801

added new port to router and apache httpd conf and rebooted my system and now i can't connect to the above link.

Working from here, page under construction
ROBIN & DAMON COMPUTER SALES AND SERVICES
If you buy a WebName you can configure that webname to point to this one, so they would just type in
www.ROBINandDAMON.com
I have 2 pages set up that way and both are running from port 8080..

I purchased a couple of Domainnames through www.dnbuy.com 9$ us / year with free cloaking (what we are talking about)
DynDNS offers the same service as do almost all of them, just watch the pricing schemes.
It also looks more professional then a .gotdns.com type address...

Glad you got your sorted Robin, now I have a few problems of the same nature...
I too have created an address, well two in fact:
win2kuser.gotdns.com
win2kuser.myftp.biz
I set apache up to run on port 80, that didn't work, so I tried 8080 in case my ISP was blocking it, then I thought maybe they block 8080 as well knowing that most people would try that instead. Anyway, I am now using 7172.
I have completely disabled my firewall as the router is just as good anyway, I've been to grc.com and checked that 7172 is open, it is.
If I type http://localhost in IE I get a time out, if I add :7172 at the end, I get the directory where the web pages will be which is what I want.
If I try the dns names, I get nothing. The bottom one of the two (myftp) automatically puts the :7172 on the end.
If I put in my actuall ip address (currently 82.2.136.121), I get a time out, put :80 on the end and I get my router setup, put :7172 on the end, and I get a time out again.
I have checked my router setup, and everything seems fine (that I can see anyway), I am redirecting port 7172 to 10.0.0.3 (server ip) as described in several sites I read earlier on setting this sort of thing up my my router (Origo ASR8400).
What more do I have to do...
Please help me before I tear out what little hair I have left :)
TIA

Well thats a step in the right direction, just got to figure out why Apache won't allow it...
Thanks.
I expect the first link would work if you added :7172 on the end...

i had to change port 80 to port 7172 in httpd.conf
and also change nameserver from port 80 to port 7172 in http conf
these changes were made for apache and then you have to restart apache.
i believe your server ip should start 192 something.(at least mine did)
i typed ipconfig in a command prompt and used the ip number that is shown there in my router.
hope this helps.

Thanks Robin.
My network uses 10.x.x.x as defined by the routers auto dhcp.
I changed all the settings to port 7172, configured the router to bypass this to the servers static ip of 10.0.0.3
If from the net someone can actually get as far as CBB has i.e. an apache screen saying 'you don't have permission', then everything must be working, just not sure wht Apache would disallow it.
Does the default Apache folde need to be shared as you would if you were sharing in over a network?
Or is there likely to be a setting in the httpd.conf file on permissions?
Thanks again...

2k,
Do you have a "default.html" or "index.html" file in your root web directory? You might be getting that error that CBB listed due to not having a default file to be served and have directory browsing disabled in apache.....
In apache you can configure it to list the folders contents if a specific file is not defined by the browser (this can be good and bad depending on what your trying to accomplish) but most people setup apache to automatically serve the "index.html" file when a specific file is not called for
Just like I have this site configured to serve www.xtremepccentral.com/index.php when all you typed in was www.xtremepccentral.com

Thanks Mike, what I would like to do is have a default html file "index.html" in that directory, but also have a directory off of that that can contain files for browsing.
win2kuser.myftp.biz for the default web page,
win2kuser.myftp.biz/docs for a directory of stuff that can be downloaded etc.
Any ideas how I would configure Apache to enable me to do this?
Thanks in advance :)
Mntsnow
04-10-2004, 5:31 AM
Well what you would want to do is in the apache config file tell it that your default file is "index.html" and put your root website page in the base directory of the webserver directory (usually /html) and then within the html folder create another folder called "docs" and NOT put a index.html file and then within the apache config file make sure that you have directory browsing enabled for when there is not a default page listed :)

Okey Dokey, Thanks Mike, I think I have done that right, could you/someone please check...
http://win2kuser.myftp.biz for the html file, and
http://win2kuser.myftp.biz/doc for the document file(s)
Thanks.
I would check it myself, buy my router won't allow it.
Mntsnow

Not quite right yet....Double check your file permissions
also what is the actual default file name? and do you actually have files/docs inside the /docs folder?
Win2Kuser
04-10-2004, 6:31 AM
Righty then, I created a quick dialup account, dailed out to check it myself. Yeah, the file permissions were wrong.
Should be ok now :)
win2kuser.myftp.biz for the html stats file, and
win2kuser.myftp.biz/doc for a directory of anything I want to download when I'm out and about :)
Just out of couriosity, how secure is this? as this is now running off my main server. I have set the file permissions to read only, and should only be for that one directory. i.e. you shouldn't be able to go back to the root from there etc.
Thanks again,
Mark.

It up and working (atleast the homepage) as it doesnt look like you have anything inside the DOCS folder or you have the permissions not set on that one or havent enabled directory browsing

Weird! As I said, I created a dailup account and used one of my other machines to check it. both worked
I didn't actually see anything in the conf file to set file browsing on or off. I presume it is in there? or is there a switch somewhere?
Thanks again.

If you can read this, then everything must be working :D
Looks good, glad to see it survives the 5 hour time difference =]
you now have a web server, piece of cake, next up will be an FTP server with a hair of mailserver :) (My Mailservers ports were shut down by ISP :p )

That is a major milestone for me, never done it before. :D
