Just got upgraded by Charter, they're phasing out the 512k connection speed, the new minimum is 768k:D
I don't think I'll spend the money to go up to 1.5M right now, unless I feel the need... the need for speed:D

broaband - so cal road runner :-D
Dual channel ISDN 128k, I could easily upgrade to ADSL-1024/128 or 768/128, but in fact I miss it rarely at home. At work we've a t1, which does all the heavy stuff, if ever needed;)

Alas, still on dial-up. Going to look into digital cable, cable connect, and maybe even swith phone service with Cox Cable. Already have Cox cable standard TV. Anybody using Cox and want to share your thoughts?

Well,
I'm on cable, of which they say max d/l speed is 300KB/s and upload 150KB/s.
My d/l speeds have been in excess of 400KB/s and my upload speed has been purring along quite nicely around 130 to 140KB/s.
So I guess I can't complain. :)

This is my first post, although I've been reading stuff here for quite awhile.
I've had Road Runner cable for several years, and I really like it!

Cox cable in gerogetwon (texas) my downloads seem to cap around 175Kb/sec and my up is about 25Kb/sec which aint that great, but it was all we could get here, we MIGHT be able to get DSL now, which I plan to find out about. Generally the techs have no clue about anything, and you need to have all 3 DNS servers in your settings, because they cant seem to manage to keep them up (although its rare for there to not be one working, there's also often ONLY one working) on the plus side the really dont care what you do with it (ie host sites etc.)

Hi,
I'm on a Dialup at home(UK) which is usually around 40K at the moment I am in France using dialup at 24k.
Dudster, I'd be interested in finding out a bit more about the system you are using in the UK.

Oh, ask away :)
It's BTopenworld's (http://www.btopenworld.com) "Home 500" ADSL package. Dynamic IP (which I prefer) and I use the supplied Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL modem (not sure what modem new customers get). People who want ethernet instead of USB have to get a business package AFAIK. I think the home package has a contention ratio of 50:1 and the business package is 20:1. Not really important though, it practically performs the same no matter what time of day I go on (one of the things DSL has over cable usually) - Though ISPs frown on anyone who uses 100% bandwidth all the time. Oh yeah, I can't say what it's like for file-sharing as I don't do it. 5 or 6 email addresses and 10MB of free webspace.
I got it before the drops in prices so I paid £150 for the installation and it was £40 per month till recently when it dropped to £30 per month. I think the installation cost is now about £75 or there's now a "wires only" package where it's cheaper than that but you need to sort your own modem out or something. I had to get a British Telecomm line installed for it also as our only line at the time was an NTL one but you need a BT line for ADSL (well you did then and AFAIK you still do, not at all 100% on that though) so got 2 phone lines now (the NTL line is free anyway). Then I fortunately passed the "whoosh" (line quality) test with flying colours. The engineer said it was the best line he'd ever tested (which might explain my bandwidth being slightly higher than 512K), partly because I'm only a few hundred metres from the exchange.
I was originally going to get cable but when the time came for it to be launched, there was something wrong in our area (still is infact) so went ADSL instead. My 12 month contract will be over in a few months but I'm planning on just renewing it (same ISP) as I'm pretty happy with it. If cable was functioning here, the upstream would only be 128k but my ADSL has 256 (actually 288).
Oh yeah, AFAIK all ADSL in the UK is now RADSL, or is it RDSL? (the R = rate adaptive) so people who were previously too far from the exchange to get ADSL can now get it as the bandwidth is capable of shrinking (and increasing again) if line noise is high, or something like that.
Not sure if your best option would be ADSL or Cable, or which ISP for that matter. But for what I do (surfing, streaming music, downloads and the occasional online game), it's great. If you're intersted in getting ADSL, one of the first steps is to check that you could actually get it where you are. I think most ISP sites have a post code checker or you could phone them up. But beware, even if they confirm that it's available in your area, the only true confirmation is when the engineer installs and tests it. If it fails at that point, the engineer "uninstalls" it again and takes it all away.
Some good links for UK - www.adslguide.org.uk - www.ispreview.co.uk - www.blueyonder.co.uk (one of the best if not the best UK internet providers, many people in the know swear by them: not sure if they do ADSL though, but they do at least do cable).
Any questions? :)

56 K dialup. :( Never get better than 50.0 K though.
Broadband is just way to expensive here in Aus. $300 installation, PLUS $70 / month (300 MB limit) or $99 / month (1 GB limit). ADSL is around $75 - $90, for the same 300 MB limit ......... I DON'T THINK SO !
When these profit mongering carriers offer more realistic prices, I may consider it.
Rant mode off now. :)

Cable. My carrier, CHARTER, Charges $20/month on top of my cable tv bill and throws in digital cable tv at no extra charge. So for the same price as dial-up, I get digital tv, music channels, and cable internet access. And my phone stays open for calls.
Holy Cow!! I just realized I sound like a commercial, sorry folks.
Roadkill that would be great if I had that type of service her but for now no cable and DSL is way to high and not that good as I've heard from friends on the DSL here. I pay $20 for dailup and only connect at 45.2Kbps :(
