I went to DSLreports and found out that I am downloading at 8kbps and uploading at 29kbps. This is slower than a 33.6k modem! I have cable internet access and have just recently installed a Linksys BEFSX41 firewall router. I had noticed a considerable slowdown so tested it. Man is it going slow. Any ideas?

Get DSL.

My cable got like that too...depending on the time of day and day of week. Now I am on DSL and have had no performance issues at all.

I am thinking though that it's a setting with my router. It was quite fast before(didn't test it however). I have always been completely satisfied with my cable internet service. Must be the hardware router.

Possibly your router is about to "go to router heaven"?

One of my customers had a similair situation, and about a week later, had to order a new router for his net. Seems it was faulty equipment for comcast...i dont know who you use for net, but that was my situation...

the first trouble-shooting i would do is connect one computer directly to the cablemodem (disconnect the router), make sure you've got a software firewall on, and run another test.

also check your packet stats on the nic for anything suspicious.

Just tested PC1 with direct cable modem connection. Download 227kbps, and upload 258kbps. Quite a bit faster. I have tried a new router replacing the Linksys BEFSX41 with a D-Link DI-704P. It is slow as well. Download is 160kbps, and upload 47kbps.

OK I think I got it straightened out now. After testing with this new D-Link DI-704P router my speeds were: download 3141kbps, upload 248kbps. I'm very happy with that:D Thank you all for your help and suggestions.
